UK site pinging to my site?

  • Unknown's avatar

I received notification that a UK site (http://www.babiesgrow.co.uk/?p=666) has linked to my blog. It looks like some woman is putting together a website that has all sorts of information from various websites displayed on her blog/site. It doesn’t look like I’m the only one she’s linked to either.

Is this considered some kind of copyright infringment? I don’t have any disclaimer on my site saying that everything I write is owned by me etc etc… I suppose I should?

She does have a link back to my site…. any suggestions as to what I should do? Also, Akismet didn’t catch this as spam and I haven’t marked it as spam yet… wanted to get some opinions on this..

    thanks!

A copyright notice is not required as the creator holds copyright automatically, but many use them to deter content theft. There are several options and some solid information in a post on my blog titled “How to copyright your digital works”.

The party in question is only using brief excerpts and then this “Read more from the original source:” with a link back to the source. So as it’s an excerpt with a link, it would probably be considered “fair use”, and you would be wasting your time trying to stop it.

That being said there does not appear to be a single entry on that site that is the original creation of the person who owns it. The About page contains in part a statement that appears to indicate the site may be being used to drive traffic “to supply information to parents of where to buy the best quality products at discount prices.”

When I get pingbacks from site like these I delete them so I’m not helping them advertise by posting the link on my blog post.

Ok, thanks so much for your help.

You’re welcome. Sadly, there are legions of opportunists using blogs to drive traffic their businesses even though they don’t create an iota of original content. Others may beg to differ with my opinion. That’s their prerogative. My opinion is that it sucks that this person is doing this, but I honestly don’t think that pursuing the issue is worth the effort in this case. How many readers do you know that would subscribe to such a site? I say delete the pingback and carry on.
