un-spammed many spam comments

There is a bulk action to mark as spam in the comments section – click on the box for the comment, so one easy check mark for each comment that needs to be marked – and the page can be set to display something like 50 or 100 comments

@justjennifer: I appreciate the comment. The last thing we want to do is punish someone.

What happens is that the act of approving large amounts of spam comments is how we’re alerted to the problem, not specifically *which* comments were approved.

Also, once a user approves spam comments, that basically green lights those comments on that particular blog so our automatic spam filtering will ignore them, as @bodats discovered. The only way to fix it is to manually mark them as spam again.

@auxclass – great tip on showing more comments and bulk marking things as spam. That would make the process less painful.

    I hope that clarifies things!

helper-heroponriki, that still requires manual review of thousands of comments. I personally prefer auxclass’ other suggestions of Akismet rescanning or resetting the site’s comments to their original status. That is assistance.

@all, very much appreciated for the input.

    1. I always monitor my comments. Many of suspicious comments got my first attention & went to spam folder. So to be clear. I never intentionly let spam comment through. Never! To said that this is a penance for allowing spam comment, is an understatement to my disicpline obeying wordpress terms & conditions all this time. I always respect wp rules & terms.

    2. The problem is, just like I mentioned before. Bloggers who use wordpress, blogger, or any site always put a back link or a link to their article. Specially in the automotive blog community like my blog, It’s a common practice among bloggers to share the same article, or at least the same topics. I can not control or know is this really blog or fake one. Is this considered a spam scheme? If the answer is yes, it will be so un practical to overview each comment’s link/site/blog. Imagine review like 20-30 comment every day. Or may be hundreds?

    3. Having said that, I try my best to figure it out. Painstakingly, as this moment, I marking spam to those comment that leaves link. Last option is to apllied the same thing to all wordpress bloggers that leaves link on comment. Which means like close the door for more interaction with fellow wp blogger. And if after “suicide” mission like this, the warning message still appear, then definitely something wrong. But not on my side.

Hopefully this is not a systematic effort to make wp think my blog disobeying their rules and shut it down. *finger crossed*

Thanks for your comments. I’ll posted the update when something bright appears.

I don’t think most people don’t start out to approve spam – some are so desperate for a comment they will approve anything even when the comment has nothing to do with the Post – it is not the link as such as where the link goes – or that the same bot or person has posted the same comment and link 1,000 times in the last few hours all over the internet – remember Akismet looks at Millions of sites in real time – so it can see that the same comment and link is all over the web – I think I have um-spammed maybe TWO comments in the last year or so

Everything posted on a blog either contributes positively or negatively to a blog’s brand. Posting spam comments is detectable to search spiders and has a negative affect on your blog’s page rank and your authority in your niche.

I have a commenting policy and I enforce it. I moderate every comment that gets posted to my blog. Scroll down to 4. Links
