Unable to activate Multisite feature

    Hi all,

    I hope someone can shed some light on the issue I’m having.

    I have a site hosted in WordPress.com and I’m trying to enable the multisite feature.

    Adding the below line to wp-config.php was not an issue.

    define( ‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true );

    However, I’m stuck in the next steps as there is no way to deactivate Akismet Anti-Spam and Jetpack.

    “Warning: Please deactivate your plugins before enabling the Network feature”

    I have been reading many forums and websites but none of them seem to have a solution for this. Even in WordPress.com Support I found this:

    Can I deactivate Jetpack?
    Some plugins are incompatible with Jetpack, and you may be advised to disable Jetpack. However, sites hosted on WordPress.com cannot deactivate Jetpack or Akismet. This is so we can continue to ensure the ultimate security and performance of your site.

    I have also tried to rename the plugins folder using WinSCP but I get the following error:

    “Permission denied.
    Error code: 3
    Error message from server: Permission denied”

    Has anyone faced this issue before? Any ideas?

    Hi there,

    One thing to be aware of is that WordPress.com is itself a giant multisite instance with millions of sites under one network. It is not possible to have a multisite instance within another multisite instance though, which is why that can’t be set up under your account with us.

    If you require multisite functionality you will instead need to switch to a self-hosted WordPress installation on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc. Once you do that, you will be able to proceed with setting up a multisite instance.
