    what we have to do ??? to change theme

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there, what theme are you trying to activate and on which WordPressdotcom website?

  • Unknown's avatar

    @justjennifer I’m having the same problem too. The website is cambridgefoodhub.org and the problem occurs with every theme I have tried to activate.

    Two weeks ago our theme changed to ‘Apostrophe 2’ suddenly. I thought the issue might have come about because we were on a paid business plan and it expired, so it switched to a free theme (although we didn’t get any notification of this so I’m not entirely sure if this is right).
    It’s messed the whole website up so I’ve tried to switch it to a new theme but none of them will activate, even the free ones (through Design > Themes). This is when we get the error message
    I’m also a bit confused about the wordpress.com/wordpress.org distinction (I have read the relevant webpages by the way). When I go to our website and press on ‘My Site’, ‘Customise: Themes’ it takes me to wordpress.com but when I press on ‘WP Admin’ to have a look at the ‘Appearance > Themes’ there, all the support buttons link to wordpress.org.
    I’m a bit of a novice so this is confusing to me!

    Also, all of my plugins have disappeared (mailchimp plugin, testimonial plugin) Which I assume is because it has gone from a business to free plan?

    @samiismail – to change a theme, please click on “My Sites” at the page top, then on “Design” and in menu dropdown, click on “Themes” to choose one of the themes offered.
    The themes selection will depend on the plan you’re currently having.

    @cambridgefoodhub
    – the “Apostrophe 2” theme is available on the free plan, so the issues might be related to plugins not available when you switched to free plan.

    Best,
    Alen

    Hello @cambridgefoodhub – cambridgefoodhub.org is pointing to WordPressdotcom servers so if the Business plan expired, that would be the likely scenario. If you haven’t renewed your Business plan, you wouldn’t be able to activate any of the Premium themes.

    However, WordPressdotcom does send out notifications of upcoming plan expiration so I’ve tagged this thread for Staff, as they can see to whom the notifications were sent.

    @alensirola69, if @samiismail has the same problem as us, when you go to My Site > Design > Themes, none of the themes will activate, even the free ones (it comes up with an error message ‘Unable to activate theme. Contact support’

    @justjennifer
    Thank you for checking this. It might just be that we missed the notification, I suppose. Do you know why it would be that we can’t even activate any of the free themes?

    I would only be guessing, but let’s wait for Staff. :)

    The emails were being sent to a colleague. I have now found them and I think there are some suggestions for how we can move forwards. Thanks again

    Thanks for letting us know. I see that Staff have since removed the tag for their attention but when you renew your plan, you’ll again have access to direct support by live chat and email.

    You’ll then be able to inquire regarding your inability to activate a different free theme on your site. My guess was that your account may not have had sufficient permissions, but as I said earlier, that is only my guess.

    Let us know if we can help with anything else. Cheers.
