Unable to add Administrators

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a few sites setup with their own individual WordPress.com accounts. I am attempting to add administrators to manage these sites but am having issues.

I’ve sent the invite to my own WordPress.com account. I go to accept the invite but recieve an error stating that i’m already a user. If i attempt to accept the invitation again i recieve a different error stating that i do not have permissions to create a user. I then noticed if I go back onto the WordPress.com account associated with the site I am now recieving an error just stating “Something went wrong”, linking me back to my own dashboard.

My only thoughts is that there is some confusion with my WordPress.com account and the users that have been pulled through the site themselves as the associated email address is the same.

    Kind Regards,
    Lewis Logan

  • Hi there,

On what site are you working? The account you’re using to post here does not own any sites on WordPress.com.

If you’re using the open source WordPress software at another host, please ask for help at https://wordpress.org/support/ instead. Our user-invitation system cannot be used to create user accounts on self-hosted WordPress sites, unless those sites are connected to your WordPress.com account via the Jetpack plugin, and the people you invite also has their own WordPress.com username accounts.

    Hi @kokkieh

Thanks for the reply. My sites are self hosted and connected via the Jetpack Plugin to a WordPress.com account.

So the site connected with this account is https://mk9-development.com.
I have another site at https://kelchnerbrewery.mk9-development.com which is connected under a different account. When trying to add this account as an admin to it I then recieve the errors mentioned. Ideally I need to be able to add myself to all my sites to oversee them and I need to be able to give my clients temporary access to set up the social media connections for publicize.

    Hopefully that clarifies my issue.

    Kind Regards,
    Lewis

  • Hi Lewis –

I’m wondering if this error could be as simple as something in the browser is running interference with the page.

Have you tried to do this from a different web browser? Or, disable all add ons and browser extensions from the current one?

Let me know if that helps at all.

    Hi staff-zinnia

    Thanks for the reply.
I’ve just given this a go. I attempted to add this account to the kelchnerbrewery.mk9-development.com site that is connected via jetpack and unfortunately get the same error that “This user is already connected”.

    Kind Regards,
    Lewis

  • I do not see your account listed as a user on that site on our end.

Am I understanding correctly that you’re trying to invite this account as an admin from the WordPress.com interface? A better method might be for the site owner to first create an admin account for you via the WP-Admin dashboard on that site, and then you make your own Jetpack connection from there.

But the Jetpack debug page is also showing me an error for the site, that XML-RPC is not connected properly:

    Jetpack

That could be what’s causing the problem here, as in order to invite a user form the WordPress.com end you need to have Jetpack’s SSO feature active, and it doesn’t look like that’s currently working.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the main account, and then try making a second connection to your WordPress.com account.

If that doesn’t work, please contact Jetpack support directly so they can look into it from their end:

    Hi @kokkieh

Yes, I am trying to invite this account as an admin via the WordPress.com interface.

Jetpack has been connected to kelchnerbrewery.mk9-development.com using the user kelchnerbrewerymk9 which has been successful.
From the kelchnerbrewerymk9 account on the WordPress.com dashboard I have attempted to invite lewisloganmk9 as an admin.
When I try accept the invite as lewisloganmk9 I then get the issues.

After attempting to accept the invite, the connection from the site to WordPress.com seems to go down and requires me to disconnect and reconnect Jetpack. (If you were to look now, kelchnerbrewery.mk9-development.com should be connected fine again).

I will contact Jetpack support shortly.

Is it possible that there is confusion because a user that exists on the website itself has same email address as my WordPress.com account?

    Many Thanks,
    Lewis

After attempting to accept the invite, the connection from the site to WordPress.com seems to go down and requires me to disconnect and reconnect Jetpack.

It sounds like your Jetpack connection could be the source of the problem. The Jetpack support team will be able to look into this further and help troubleshoot the reason for any connection issues.

As far as I know, there shouldn’t be any problems because although you are inviting other users through the WordPress.com interface, they are being invited to the Jetpack site itself. This is something the Jetpack team can confirm though.
