unable to add new categories

  Hi

  I am new to WP. I had initially added one category but now want to add more categories but i am unable to do so. I go to posts<categories and add a new category but it is not showing on the blog.

  Also, I want to link the images on my blog to the categories. Is there a way to do this? I try doing it from the visibility options but again it is not showing up on the blog.

  Is there a general consolidated guidebook on getting started with WP available anywhere?
