Unable to add new photos to old galleries
-
I haven’t tried to update galleries on my blog in a long time, but I was recently helping a friend update his old galleries, and discovered that there was no way to add new photos to a pre-existing gallery – the visual editor doesn’t appear on his gallery page anymore. We ended up creating a new gallery, which worked.
As it turns out, I checked on my blog, and apparently I can’t add new images to old galleries either. The visual editor doesn’t show up as it used to – it simply says [slideshow] where the visual editor should be. Maybe this was an issue months or years ago and I just missed it, but has anyone else run into this? Any suggestions?

So, there is a second way to edit a gallery if the normal way is not working for some reason. When you go to the edit screen of a page with a gallery and click the “text” view, you’ll see something like this:
[gallery order="DESC" type="rectangular" ids="1688,720,721,719,537,534,187,181,183,186,189,188,715,716,717,718,541,540"]
The numbers are attachment ID’s for images in the media library. You just need to add on the ID of the image you want to include (or delete the ID’s of any you want to remove).
To get an attachment ID for an image, go to your Media Library and click on the title of the image you want. You can find the ID in the URL (the number after post=).

Yeah, you know, I tried this approach when I first ran into the problem- because it seemed like it would be an obvious fix. I’ve added images that way in the past. But, on the text view, it just shows the same thing as on the visual view. All that appears is [slideshow].
Any other suggestions?

The old Slideshow shortcode simply displayed the images that were uploaded directly to the post/page where the slideshow was inserted.
Did you try uploading a new image to that same post/page to see if it was included in the slideshow?

Let me know if this works:

Here’s a link to the page itself – is that what you meant?

The same happened with this gallery, on a different blog. This was where I first discovered the issue.

Hm, OK. I’ll try to get around to test this in the next day or so.
Meantime, please upload an odd image (one of these things is not like the other) on this post blog.ijnr.org/galleries/puget-sound-institute-2011 and this post rigdonwoodwork.wordpress.com/gallery that would be helpful too.

2 more questions:
are you using the visual or the text editor and what web browser and version are you using? -
The same appears in both text and visual editor. Instead of showing the visual editor – or the list like rootjosh mentioned above – it just says [slideshow].
I’m using Safari 7.0.4. I get the same results with Firefox, though.
I’ll add an “odd” photo to the IJNR blog. I don’t have access to the other one at the moment.

Looking at the sourcecode for your page, to me it looks like you uploaded and inserted a separate image unconnected to the slideshow.
Besides the workaround using the image ID that rootjosh gave you, you can try this: upload your images directly to your Media Library. After they’ve finished uploading, switch back to the main Media Library Dashboard and you will see that your images are “unattached”. Use the “attach to” link on each image to attach it to the Post or Page where you want it to appear.
I’ve just tried this successfully on this post http://agallerydemo.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/mix-it-up-slideshowgallery/ where the B&W image was added to the slideshow via the method I described above.

The visual editor doesn’t show up as it used to
If you are missing the Visual Editor, try refreshing your browser or perform the cookie/cache dance. I know that Safari has been problematic in the past, but can’t confirm that is the problem today. Chrome and Firefox latest versions are the recommended browsers.

Right, I just uploaded that lone photo onto the page because I thought that’s what you’d asked me to do.

I know how to attach photos to posts or pages – I’ve been doing that for years, on several different blogs. The issue is not putting photos in posts/pages, it’s adding new photos to old galleries. All the images that currently appear in galleries are labeled as “unattached,” so there is no way to link new images to the same gallery. It seems as though there’s been an update made somewhere, and the old version of the gallery no longer communicates with the new image/media stuff. Although the galleries show up and work just fine, they don’t translate into something editable.

Yes, there was a huge update to Media handling in November 2012.
All the images that currently appear in galleries are labeled as “unattached,” so there is no way to link new images to the same gallery.
So attach them. Did you try what I suggested above?
The other alternative is to simply recreate the Gallery with the new tools.
If you are looking for the mechanics…
In the old Gallery, images had to be attached to the post/page where they were displayed. In the new Gallery, you can use any image already appearing in your Media Library to create a Gallery in any post or page. That, however, does creates havoc when you’ve linked your Gallery to Attachment pages and not the Photo Carousel, which is the new default unless you’ve turned it off in Media Settings.Although the galleries show up and work just fine, they don’t translate into something editable
The only “editing” options you have for old-style Galleries are the same you had when you created them. Upload and attach to post to add an image or delete it from the Media Library to remove it from the Gallery.

Honestly, this may be the best bet.

staff-ozmodiar – If all the OP wants to do is add to the existing Gallery/Slideshow, the upload and attach method is quicker. If it comes to rearranging the images, then the new Gallery is the only way to go.
