unable to admin login

Hello, I was told by a tech friend that I needed to change my domain from http to https. I did this on my wordpress admin page under settings. Then I saved the update. Now, I am no longer able to login to my page at all and when I google my site, google says it is no longer secure. How can I get this back to the way it was before?

The top level domain here is wordpress.COM and all sites hosted here are on .wordpress.com sub domains. All .wordpress.com sites are https:// sites.

You can purchase your own domain to remove the appearance of the .wordpress.com in it.

What is the “domain name” you are referring to?

Are you referring to a .wordpress.com sub domain?

Are you trying to purchase your own domain?

What is the URL you are referring to?

  • Hi there,

You don’t have any sites on WordPress.com, so it sounds like you have a self-hosted site.

For self-hosted sites you cannot just change the domain in settings. All that does is break your site and lock you out of the dashboard. Additionally, before you can enable HTTPS you first need an SSL certificate. You can buy that directly from your hosting provider, or you can get a free certificate via a service like Let’s Encrypt (though your host might still charge you to connect that certificate to your site).

Adding SSL to your site is definitely a good thing, but you need to follow the right steps to do it without breaking your site :)

You will need to contact your web host to help you get back into your site. We can’t do that as we don’t have any access to sites hosted elsewhere.

You can also try asking in the self-hosted WordPress.org forums in case someone there knows how to fix it.
