Unable to alter menu and assign pages

  • Unknown's avatar

When creating a menu I can list choices on the main screen by selecting page-name in the left hand box and renaming them as a menu item The page names in the left hand box are carry overs from other sources and cannot be edited or deleted. The saved menu will display on the main page under the header graphic. The result is that I am not able to create a page and assign it to a primary menu item.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When you say you are not able to create a page and assign it to a primary menu name do you mean that the menu name is to be a static header with several clickable pages under it? Or do you intend for your primary menu items to link to a single page on your site?

I think that reviewing the article on custom menues will help in either regard, but feel free to provide more information on the presentation you envision and we might be able to help further.

If you mean the primary static menu tab with subpages see this – https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/view-all/#creating-static-parent-tabs

If you want each of your menu items to link to a specific page, create your page first and then it will be offered to you as a menu item.

My goal is to have several menu titles under which several related static pages can be listed for access. *** When going to Admin, then to Menu’s, I have a primary area where the menu titles are created and ordered. To the left are a listing of pages, some of which are indented. Most of these are pages that have been carried forward from past-or-other blog sites and not created for the current site. *** If I click on one of these it can show up on the central page listing of menu titles. I can edit these to both change and/or create the Menu titles I want. Although this works, I think it is not a correct approach. When I try to link a page intended for this site to a menu, I get a listing on the RH side showing the same pages as is on the left side — and none of my Menu choices are listed, preventing me from assigning a page to a menu. My first blog site was 8 or more years ago, much has changed. I purchased a new WP book, “teach yourself Visually . . ” so that I could precisely follow the examples. Nothing is working out. My next ‘solution’ will be to erase all pages (intended and carried-over) and all menus, keep the header and title, and try to go from scratch. The blog site is ‘greensnakeretold.wordpress.com’ and is based on Johann Goethe’s fairy tale (The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily) and his finding a path to conscious awareness. *** I understand that the basic process is to create the menu titles, then create the page, and finally to assign the page to a menu as a parent repository for the page. Thank you for your reply. I’ll post after this next series of attempts. Dave

Don’t throw out the good pages , we can work with getting those where they need to be.

Although it’s good to have your menu conceptualized, I find it works best to create your pages first (at lest those that are ready to be created) and then start making a menu with them.

Check out the links I gave you above especially the one about static parent tabs.

Found a success path. Erased every published page. Erased every menu. Recreated a menu. Copied a MS Word document and published it with no links or attributes to any menu or other page. Went to the Menus, clicked on a menu item. A list of the one published page appeared. I chose it and save the menu. Presto, the static page is now under the proper menu heading. No steps take look like the book example, and not really like the forum examples — although they may work when I get more agile with this process. In any case, thank you for being there and leading me to a success. When I look at the number of issues raised by so many, I find it amazing that the forum members can offer effective help. A great community. Dave
