I want to change my domain name, but when I look at the domains page, there is no “edit” button beside the name.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you want to change the .wordpress.com blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so, then you can change the URL by using this guide
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/
Be sure to locate the correct page http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dashboard-e1371648470893.png

Changing a URL is a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and no exceptions are made.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL. Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    I have a related question/problem:

I started a test blog, TourEatDrink.wordpress.com, then another one, TourEatDrink2.wordpress.com, which I’ve decided is the theme and format I want to keep. I also own the domain TourEatDrink.com, purchased awhile ago from GoDaddy. My hope was to take the TourEatDrink2.wordpress.com, and change it via WP to TourEatDrink.com, but WP doesn’t seem to allow me to do that. Any ideas?

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

Thanks so much, timethief! That worked like a charm. Now my address matches my blog name, which soothes my desire for symmetry.

Hooray! I love happy endings. :)

@timethief, I appreciate that you and others know the jargon, and can easily decipher everything you have explained here, but I am not sure that you have answered my question.

Can you, or anyone else, explain to a newbie, in less technical verbage, if I can take the blog I’ve started on WP (as a test) with a .wordpress.com url and change it to a .com if the main part of the name is different?

To be more clear, I started TourEatDrink.wordpress.com, AND TourEatDrink2.wordpress.com as I was treading through the murky waters of WordPress, and learning how to set up a blog. I settled on a theme on the TourEatDrink2 site, set it up, figured it out, posted some posts, and spent a lot of time of that site, assuming I would be able to upgrade, go premium…whatever!…and map my existing domain name, TourEatDrink.com (purchased from GoDaddy) to WordPress, and change the name of TourEatDrink2.wordpress.com to TourEatDrink.com.

But, when I try to upgrade my TourEatDrink2.wordpress.com, it seems to only allow me to upgrade to TourEatDrink2.com, NOT TourEatDrink.com…is that clear?

    @timethief, I, too, love happy endings…
