Unable to change slug in permalink

  • Unknown's avatar

I went through the forums but couldn’t solve the issue.

I have the blog page slug as /blog-2
I’m trying to update it to /blog but nothing happens.
I checked slugs of other pages in my website and even the trashed pages and posts. I cleared the trash section too.

But still I’m unable to solve the issue.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Also is there a way to change the permalink of my blog post to not include date?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there!

With a free WordPress.com site you’ll be able to customize the slugs but to be able to change the permalink structure you’ll need plan Business or above. Here’s more information about that:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/slugs/

If you trashed the original page with the /blog slug, it will usually take about 24 hours to update the new blog page with that slug. So, if you just emptied the trash, I would wait a day or so and see if you are able to update.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks!

Its been almost 48 hours now but still the the update doesn’t happen.

This may sound weird but is there a place where I can see the list of all permalinks to my site?
    Or any other suggestions?

  • Try signing out of the account and clearing your browser cache:

Write back to me here if that doesn’t work.

So, I logged out then cleared my browser cache. Then I tried a different browser (didn’t use before). But still that blog-2 doesn’t seem to go away.

  • Hmm, that’s odd. I tried to change the slug for you but I’m having the same issue.
Are you able to create a new page with the slug /blog instead? I think that should work. You would then be able to set that page to display your recent posts and remove the /blog-2 one.

I created another page with the slug /blog but after it got created it got assigned the /blog-3 slug.

  • Okay, it must not be a typical page that has that slug.

If you have already checked the post and page trash, I would also check your categories, tags, portfolio projects, and media items to make sure that none of those have the slug. There is a likelihood that one of those is currently occupying the slug. Once we find it, I can flush the cache on our end and you should be able to add the slug.

    Thanks,

I have finished checking the media items.
    There are no portfolio projects.
And, what are categories and tags? Are you talking about the ones that appear in the blog post?

  • Yes, categories and tags for the posts can reserve a word like “blog” but I’m not seeing that here. I have seen cases in the past where “blog” was used up by something else and couldn’t be used without getting a -2 or -3 at the end.

    Can we try something?

Create a new page; call it “news” or whatever.

Under Customize > Home Page Settings, set that as your posts page. Then update us here, and with your permission we’ll attempt renaming the page again.

So I created a new page with the slug news and I have set it as my posts page in Home Page Settings.
You can try to rename it now

  • Hi there,

As this is a very rare issue, I need to do a bit of testing and ask our developers. I’ll let you know as soon as I have some answers.

  • Unknown's avatar

Alright! Thanks to all of you involved!
    I’ll wait for the resolution.

    Hi!
Just wanted to follow-up on this…

  • Hi there,

Yes, we were able to replicate the issue and are in the process of reporting it on our end. We’ll update you as soon as possible on what we find.

    Thanks,

  • I figured out why you can’t change the Blog page slug. It’s because that slug is used by your Home page.

To fix this you need to change the Home page slug to home (or anything else). This will free the blog slug and you’ll be able to use on the Blog.

    I’m using the Pen2Scratch theme.
The permalink section of the home page does not show any slug. Where else can I check?
Or is it in-built in this theme?

  • It does not depend on the theme, but it looks like you have already sorted it out? I can see your homepage has the slug /home and the blog page /blog.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not sure I see that. The /blog slug still redirects me to the home page. And the blog page is still with the slug /blog-2.

  • I definitely don’t see anything left there with a /blog slug, so I have cleared your site’s cache.

Are you able to change the slug now?
