Unable to change the order of the head-titles in the menu.
-
On my blog, politicworm.com, I am trying to rearrange the headings in the menu bar. I have tried changing the order so that SHAKESPEARE WHO? is 1, BACKGROUND is 2, and WHY OXFORD? is 3, but still WHY OXFORD? remains in the #1 position. What can I do to get these headers to go where I want them?

Page order numbers work when the theme displays its regular top menu. When it displays a custom menu, you need to change the order by dragging items in Appearance > Menus.

Thanks. That explains why I’m having trouble with that. Now the problem is that I can’t make the subsidiary pages stay where I put them. After wrestling with it for hours trying to put the headline articles in the right order, now it’s the subsidiary articles that won’t stay put. It’s put the original order completely out of whack.
Could I fix this by creating a Custom Menu? Or do I simply have too many pages now? And would subscribing to an upgrade allow me to take control of page order?
thanks for your help.

I would definitely suggest going to a custom menu. It has far greater flexibility and no need for complicated page ID or parent/child page futzing.

I disagree with thesacredpath, first because you have already set the parent-child relationships, second and more important because you have too many pages and subpages (so dragging all these items around in Appearance > Menus is inconvenient). I would suggest the opposite: make sure the theme displays its regular menu (Appearance > Menus: select the blank option from the Theme Locations pulldown, save). Then you can take care of the order via page numbering.

Wow! Thanks justpi! One click and everything was solved. I had no idea what that blank option meant, and I don’t recall reading anything about it on wordpress. Which isn’t to say it isn’t there, but I spent many fruitless hours trying to figure this out. Thanks again.

You’re welcome.
As for “reading about it”, well, my post on menus is more thorough than the Support doc…
