Unable to create child pages

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog (http://mattkailey.wordpress.com) is set to private because it is still in creation. I have not started the blog part yet and am still working on creating static web pages, but I will change the setting to public for someone to view it if they need/want to do that to answer my question. I have read every help entry on this topic for the last 90 minutes and also watched a video, but cannot figure out the problem.

In my Edit Pages mode, I am not given the option of choosing parent or child pages–I see from the video that there is supposed to be a drop-down box under Attributes that would allow me to choose Parent or Child, but I have no drop-down box on any of the Edit Page pages. I have changed themes just to see if, for some reason, my chosen theme simply doesn’t have that option, but it doesn’t matter what theme I choose–there is no drop-down box under Attributes. The paragraph about nesting pages appears (where it says “You can arrange your pages in hierarchies, etc.), but the drop-down box that goes with it does not appear.

Has anyone run into this problem before? I have created several static pages and want to next some under others, but they are all parent pages with no option to change them. Even when I create a new page, the drop-down box under Attributes does not appear.

If anyone has a thought or knowledge of this, I would appreciate any help, and I thank you just for reading this.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you tried doing this after going public?

Or stay in private mode the whole time?

This may seem like a really obvious thing, but are you 100% certain those are Pages and not Posts? Posts would account for what you’re seeing. And one very common mistake is for beginners to make their blog out of Pages; definitely do most informational content as Posts, for reasons too numerous to go into here.

    (1) Which theme are you referring to?
    (2) What is your operating system?
    (3) Which browser and version of it are you using? And have you done these things?

Currently Chrome and the new AVG anti-virus update are causing some bloggers problems.

I agree with raincoaster. It does sound like you are mistaking pages for posts.
    Please read this entry http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
The tabs you create at the top of the blog are for Pages. Pages are not posts. They are static and sit outside the blog structure. They are intended to be used only for information that is rarely, if ever updated. They lack the Google juice that posts get.

Thank you both for responding so quickly!

Dreamsburnred, no, I have stayed in private mode the whole time. I will try making a page public and then seeing if the drop-down appeared in edit.

Raincoaster, they are pages. I am using the Pages function to create them. I have a static Web site elsewhere and a blog on Blogger, and what I want to do here is combine my static Web site with my blog so that everything is in one place. My goal is to have my blog and then my static Web pages together, instead of in two different places. Everything is showing up like it is supposed to for editing pages, including the Attributes section. The only thing that’s not showing up is that one drop-down menu for parent/child.

Thanks again and please let me know if you have any other thoughts. Thanks so much.

I tried making a page public and it didn’t change anything. I don’t know why that’s not showing up. According to the video I watched and everything I’ve read, it should be right there under Attributes. I must be doing something wrong, but I can’t figure out what.

You have said: “I have a static Web site elsewhere and a blog on Blogger, and what I want to do here is combine my static Web site with my blog so that everything is in one place.”

If you intend to delete all the entries from the other locations a place them in one location you will not be subject to a duplicate content penalty. If, however, you do have duplicate contents in multiple sites this is NOT a good thing.

    Id this what you see?

    Attributes
    Parent
    Page Parent

You can arrange your pages in hierarchies. For example, you could have an “About” page that has “Life Story” and “My Dog” pages under it. There are no limits to how deeply nested you can make pages.
    Order

    Page Order

Pages are usually ordered alphabetically, but you can put a number above to change the order pages appear in.

Timethief, thanks for that link. In the Quick Edit mode and the regular edit mode, it doesn’t give me a choice of the parent/child option. I have Attributes checked to be visible under screen options, and the Attributes section is visible, except for that one drop-down box. I’m obviously doing something wrong and I have no idea what it is. I have tried everything. The edit page looks just like it does in the video, with one exception–no parent/child drop-down box. I thank you all for your input and I really appreciate your time.

  • Unknown's avatar

Timethief, yes, that is what I see, with the exception of the drop-down box–the Parent Page box. The words are there about the hierarchies and such and no limit to how deep you can nest. Those words are all there–but no drop-down box.

Timethief, as far as the duplicate content–no, I intend to take everything else down as soon as I get this ready to go live. I’m taking down my other Web site and my blogger blog.

Timethief, I think that will probably be what I will have to do. I think someone will have to see the back end. I really appreciate your time though–all of you who responded, especially since some of you might be celebrating a holiday today. But whether you are or not, I thank all of you and hope that you will have a good weekend.

I’m sorry we can’t figure this out. I hope you will try to force refresh your browser, clear your cookies and cache and sign back in and try again before you contact staff. http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

Best wishes to you as well. :)

I will do all that first, and thank you so much for all your help.

For interest sake which browser and version of it are you using?
Do you have another browser you can try?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m using Firefox 3.5.6. I can try another browser and see what happens. Firefox usually serves me well, but it’s possible that it’s not this time.

  • Unknown's avatar

Nerts! I’m using Firefox 3.5.6 too and I cannot get this odd behavior you have experienced to repeat. :(
