unable to customize themes

  For a while now i am unable to customize any themes. Whenever i click on Appearance – Customize it shows a blank page that only displays the name of my website and Widgets – which, if i access, says „Your theme has 4 widget areas, but this particular page doesn’t display them. You can navigate to other pages on your site while using the Customizer to view and edit the widgets displayed on those pages’. This happens with any theme that i try to use and shows the same page if i try to live preview a theme that is not installed.

  Does anyone know why this happens or what can i do to fix it? I use google chrome but it shows up the same in mozilla or explorer. Also, wordpress, all themes and plugins are updated.
