Unable to download XML file
-
Dear WordPress,
I want to export an XML file of my blog in order to have a back-up. Normally, I have no problem doing so, but this time after I click on “Download Export File” and wait (as per usual), I do not get a file to download but instead a Firefox error page saying:
Firefox can’t find the file at http://thegrandnarrative.wordpress.com/wp-admin/export.php?download=true&content=all&cat=0&post_author=0&post_start_date=0&post_end_date=0&post_status=0&page_author=0&page_start_date=0&page_end_date=0&page_status=0&submit=Download+Export+File.
Thinking this may be a problem with my browser, I tried doing so in Google Chrome, but the same happened again.
I’ve had this problem for several days now, always with the same error message above. Thank you in advance for your help in resolving it.
Regards,
James Turnbull. -
Hi James,
The export file is probably too large. You can follow the instructions in this guide on how to export your blog content in portions instead:
-
Thank you for your assistance, but could you please clarify 2 things for me?
– How large is “too large”? Will I *never* be unable to download “all content” again?
– I exported a Jan – April 2013 “posts” XML file. Does this have the comments included, or do I need to export an additional “feedback” file?
Thanks again!

There’s no specific size but a large export file might also give trouble importing it elsewhere. That’s why we offer the ability to export your content in portions.
The export you did (Jan – April 2013) does contain comments.
