Unable to Edit Draft Posts – Just Seeing Blank Page
-
I’m using my XP machine (I know but I put a new post up successfully last week) and am trying to edit a new post from my drafts page. If I click on any of the drafts, I just get a blank screen. The screen starts off with grey but blank headers like it’s going to fill in the existing text of the post but then the whole screen just goes blank.
I’ve also tried selecting an already published post from the admin page and am also getting a blank page.
I can access the information on my Windows 10 machine but, as I said, last week I put up a post as usual using my XP machine (which is far easier to use and is where my photos live) and had no problems.
I’m not getting any error messages that I can see. I normally use the Opera browser but switched to Chrome to see if that helped but still nothing. I’ve cleared my cache, cookies and everything else repeatedly on both browsers but still no luck. I’ve also rebooted my machine but it’s come back the same.
I also temporarily disabled my AVG anti-virus to see if that was blocking something but still no luck.
Any ideas please?

Hi! If clearing the cache didn’t help, would you be willing to share any output you’re seeing in your browser’s JS console? Here’s how to get to that:
https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/advanced-browser-troubleshooting/#java-script-errorsIf possible, upload a screenshot here: https://wordpress.com/media
Or you can use https://snipboard.io/ and share a link. Thank you in advance!

Hi, is it okay if I post the results straight in here? I’ve copied them into a Word Doc for now as I couldn’t remember exactly how to do the screenshot and it doesn’t fit on one screen anyway… see below for results – there are indeed errors!

Hi there,
To clarify, you are only having this issue when editing your posts on your XP computer? Microsoft dropped support for XP a few years ago, as as time goes on it is becoming less and less compatible with modern browser technologies. See: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/windows/end-of-windows-xp-support
In this case, I believe the issue here XP lacks the ability to support the jQuery code that the WordPress.com block editor is built on. Because of this, there is not a way for us to offer a fix on our end, as it’s likely the case that Windows XP needs to be updated to add improved jQuery support. Sadly Microsoft no longer offers feature updates (I believe they only offer critical security updates) so that is not an option in this case.
One thing you may want to consider however is using Firefox as your web browser, since it uses a different browser engine than what Opera/Chrome use. It may be the case our editor will load in that browser, where it cannot on Chromium based browsers. It’s a bit of a long shot but worth it since it’s the easiest option to try.
Another option is to switch to our “classic editor” instead of using the block editor. I’m not sure I would recommend this option long-term since we will retire the classic editor at some point in the future, but because it is an older interface using older coding it likely works on XP. https://wordpress.com/support/classic-editor-guide/
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hi Jerry,
I realise XP isn’t really supported anywhere any more but I posted successfully on the 31st May (just over a week ago) so was surprised not to be able to just over a week later. I’m assuming some kind of upgrade has gone in between then and now?I accidentally found the old ‘classic editor’ last night when I was messing around seeing what I could and couldn’t do to posts last night and was delighted as, along with most other people I know, I find it much easier to use – more intuitive etc. and ideal on laptops.
Now I’ve refound it, I’m a bit dismayed to see you write that it will be retired and not just left out there. Do know when that might be?
Is it going to help when I decide to have my XP machine upgraded to Windows 7? (which might have to be soon). I already have one Windows 10 machine and have no desire to have my main laptop using the same operating system as I find it absolutely horrible to use – it takes me much, much longer to do the same amount of work on the new machine!

We’re following the direction of what the WordPress open source project is moving towards. The open source project is what works on the actual WordPress software. The Block editor (also known as “Gutenberg”) is their first step in modernizing WordPress. Here’s a quote from their FAQ: https://developer.wordpress.org/block-editor/handbook/faq/
“Gutenberg” is the name of the project to create a new editor experience for WordPress — contributors have been working on it since January 2017 and it’s one of the most significant changes to WordPress in years. It’s built on the idea of using “blocks” to write and design posts and pages. This will serve as the foundation for future improvements to WordPress, including blocks as a way not just to design posts and pages, but also entire sites. The overall goal is to simplify the first-time user experience of WordPress — for those who are writing, editing, publishing, and designing web pages. The editing experience is intended to give users a better visual representation of what their post or page will look like when they hit publish.
Since the development of the WordPress software is moving in this direction, when new versions of the software is released, we update the software here at WordPress.com.
We also understand that people still use the Classic Editor, which is why it’s still available here (it’s not in the WordPress software). But, eventually newer versions of WordPress won’t be compatible with the legacy Classic Editor and that’s why we’re encouraging you to try the new Block editor which has a “Classic block” that will give you most of the same functionality that the Classic Editor has:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
Is it going to help when I decide to have my XP machine upgraded to Windows 7?
I would say no. Microsoft dropped support for and updates for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020. While it might be more modern than XP, it’s still an operating system that was released in 2009 and likely will have the same issues here if not now, down the road.
I would try on your Windows 10 machine to see if you have the same issue here.
I hope that clarifies things.

The Windows 10 machine doesn’t have the issues I’m having putting posts up but I find it so horrible to use, I’ve pretty much only been using it to read e-mails and then only on the days my XP doesn’t want to play! It doesn’t seem to be able to do a tenth of the non-internet work that my older XP machine can do so I’m going to have to keep my old machine anyway as a database and to scan photos, record vinyl to digital etc. The new laptop seems to have very little functionality… At least when the XP is no longer doing stuff online, it will be a very safe database machine!
Until I found the old ‘classic editor’ last night, I had been using the ‘classic block’ way of writing my posts but still find it very clunky compared to the old classic editor. My blog isn’t anything fancy so doesn’t need anything other than me to be able to write simple prose about my mountain days and put photos into the post so the classic editor was ideal for me.
The only problem I’m now having with the classic editor is that the media library no longer seems to work. The old button is there but seems dead and the new button isn’t on the toolbar. Shift + alt + M doesn’t work either. Should they still be working with the old classic editor do you know?
-
That’s definitely still working, but please do keep in mind the whole classic editor will eventually no longer work.
Are you seeing that problem on Windows XP or Windows 10?
-
-
Again, you’re likely running into the issue where your operating system just isn’t compatible with modern versions of WordPress and we have no way to get around that here.
We strongly encourage you to use Windows 10 going forward as that still seems to work with the Classic Editor. But again, the Classic Editor will eventually go away as well, so you should start trying and using the Classic Block in the block editor to get used to things before that happens.
-
Well I’ve been using both but they both fill me with depression really. I can see that when Classic Editor finally goes and if I also end up just with Windows 10, I’ll probably give up blogging as it will just be too much hassle (I know quite a few of my fellow bloggers feel the same way).
There must definitely have been an upgrade of some kind since May 31st though as it was all fine before that.
I’ve managed to put a post out anyway using both machines – one for the typing (without the constant interruptions of Win10) and the other for the photos so I’ll continue like that for a while… sigh…
Thanks everyone for your help anyway…

There must definitely have been an upgrade of some kind since May 31st though as it was all fine before that.
There are constantly updates to both the editor and to WordPress.com as a whole. There are also constantly updates to the HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP coding languages that are used to create WordPress.com. And it is more likely that it was an update to one of these languages, rather than an update to the editor, that caused this to break – if you don’t use the latest browser, there comes a point where your browser simply no longer understands the coding languages themselves, and there’s nothing we can do about that.
As your browser becomes more outdated, you’ll start seeing issues like this on more and more websites, until the internet eventually becomes completely unusable. The only way to prevent that is to always use the newest version of both your operating system and browser.
