Unable to edit header menu

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear wordpress team,
I imported a child theme called Bistro from Woocommerce and I’m using it for my website.
Now, I’d like to ask you how to activate the child theme since it says on my wordpress themes tab that the theme “storefront” is active and I do not see any option to activate a child theme.
Furthermore and that is at the core of this post: I am unable to edit the header menu of the template I have chose in elementor. I only allows me to add content below the header.
How can I enable editing it ?
    Cheers,
    Mark

  • Hello, I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your website. However, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted elsewhere.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

And, you can find support for your theme at https://wordpress.org/support/theme/bistro/

    Hi macmanx,
    thanks for your support.
The reason we are hosting elsewhere is that by the looks of it we need to pay for the hosting even while trying to build the website itself. Hence a few followup questions:

Is it possible to edit and create wordpress sites before hosting them ?

You mentioned we are using wordpress.org but our wordpress login only works for wordpress.com. So firstly, how is that possible and do I need to create a wordpress.org account to access the .org support page ?

    Thank you,
    Mark

  • Hi there,

Is it possible to edit and create wordpress sites before hosting them ?

Yes, you can develop your site locally on your computer and upload it to a host at a later time.

You mentioned we are using wordpress.org but our wordpress login only works for wordpress.com.

You have created a WordPress.com account and you have your site connected to it because of the Jetpack plugin. Jetpack relies on WordPress.com for some of its features (e.g. Stats, Image CDN, etc.).

do I need to create a wordpress.org account to access the .org support page ?

Yes, you’ll need to create a WordPress.org account to post in their forum. Here’s how to create an account:

    and here are the forums:

    Hi,
thanks for the quick replay. How exactly can I edit the site locally and upload it at a later time ? When registering for wordpress, there was no such option. In fact, one could not even proceed the registration process without either owning or purchasing a domain.
I would like to edit my site locally with elementor and all the might of wordpress prior to purchasing hosting plans and even a domain. How do I accomplish that ?
    Cheers,
    Mark

  • Mark –

Check with your hosting provider to see if they offer a staging site. Understand we have no access to the site for providing help. You’ll need to use the forums linked previously at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

I made a wordpress.org account and scoured through the support page, without finding an option to create a new support thread.
I can try looking into my hosters options.
However, I would like to ask you how, concretely, I can transfer the site to wordpress and edit it with elementor.
That indepently of my hoster, independently of my domain and without having to pay for wordpress hosting.
    Cheers,
    Mark

  • without finding an option to create a new support thread.

At the bottom of each section there you’ll find an option to post at the bottom of the section. In your case, I’d recommend https://wordpress.org/support/theme/bistro/#new-topic-0

However, I would like to ask you how, concretely, I can transfer the site to wordpress and edit it with elementor.

You can transfer the site to us following this guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/

To use Elementor though, since that is a plugin, you’d need a paid Business Plan here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/#using-other-plugins
