Unable to edit MX records in custom DNS

    Hi —

I have registered my domain at wordpress.com. Recently I chose to host the domain through godaddy to make the switch to wordpress.org. I kept my domain registered here at wordpress.com and simply changed the nameservers to point towards my new godaddy info.

My site is working just fine, but the email address I have set up through the google app is no longer working. I am assuming the problem lies in the MX records.

I contacted godaddy to see if I needed to input new MX data via their site and they told me that they did not have permission to edit the MX records and that a message appeared to them telling me to contact wordpress.com about it.

In the field where I would usually input the MX records here at wordpress (the custom DNS field) a message has appeared telling me that none of my custom DNS will work unless I switch my nameservers back to the original wordpress.com ones.

    Help! Thanks!

  • Hi there,

Custom DNS records – like the ones used to generate Google Apps DNS records – can only be used when your name servers are pointing to WordPress.com.

If you’ve set your domain to use GoDaddy’s nameservers, they indeed should be able to allow you to add MX records – or do this on your behalf – in order to get your Google Apps working.

If GoDaddy is still unable to help you make the changes you require, you might want to ask them what name servers you can use so that they will be able to assist you.

Please let me know if this continues to be an issue and we’ll continue to try to help sort it out.
