Download starts, then shuts down before reaching ~200MB
.xml export file is clearly not enough when migrating a WP site
I´m going from here to WP 5.5.1 and imported website is totally smashed

Can you please provide me with my site backup files

  • Hi there,

If the media download times out, and your browser won’t let you just resume the download, you will need to use a download manager app to help you complete the download instead.

But you don’t need to download the media library to migrate a site. In fact, the media library export is completely useless as far as site migration is concerned.

All that option does is to dump all the files in the media library on your hard drive as a .tar archive – that’s not something that you can import to another WordPress site at all.

Instead, just do a regular export of the site content.

When you import that .xml file to the new site, the importer on that site will automatically fetch any media files mentioned in the export file, from the media library of your site on our end. This is how the WordPress import plugin is designed to work.

If that’s what you did, and all the images weren’t automatically imported on the other end, it means there’s a problem with the import process on your new site. Most often, it means you’re hitting timeouts or network request limits on your server.

For help troubleshooting exactly what might be causing this, you can ask in the forums for the WordPress importer plugin at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/wordpress-importer/
