Unable to export blog: HTTP 500 Internal Server Error

For quite some time I’ve been unable to export my site using the free export feature under tools. I thought maybe this was due to my using Linux, but today I tried it from Windows 7 and I have the same problem. When I have the settings to “all” and click on export it eventually just times out. The only thing that seems to work is to define a very short period of months. However, this would take many exports to get the whole blog and I don’t know that I could then re import all of them to combine them together if I needed to.
I see from searching the forums that sometimes larger blogs can cause the script to time out. In the case I found they were able to run a separate script and email the results. Can someone assist me with this? Thanks rachelmcr! I don’t see the email from you with the link. Perhaps gmail is just slow today. I’ll keep checking.

Please check in your email client spam/ junk mail filter as well as your “social” tab in Gmail, if you use it.

Hi rachelmcr. Yes, it was in the “social” tab, just as timethief suggested. I had written up a reply to her noting this and thanking her, but I must have failed to hit submit. Thanks to both of you for your help.
