Unable to find “INHERIT QUERY” option

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi folks,

I’ve been trying to filter my posts by two tags simultaneously without having to create a new combined tag. I was told to use the inherit query via the query loop but apart from the Additional CSS class(es) box, I would get no other options show up.

He suggested it might be because I was using an inactive theme so advised me to switch to a new one but I’m still not getting any inherit query?

I am using the “Canard” theme.

Any help appreciated or if there is another suggestion for filter tags simultaneously would be great, thank you!

    Hello @ominousbeep,

I can imagine how puzzling it must be when something doesn’t appear as expected, especially after switching themes. Could you let me know where you were advised to use the “inherit query” option? That’ll help me look into it more clearly with that context.

That said, the reason you’re not seeing an inherit query setting is because that option isn’t available in the Query Loop block on WordPress.com. But the good news is, you can absolutely filter your posts by two tags without needing to create a new one. Here’s how to do it:

    1. Select the Query Loop block on your page.
    2. In the right sidebar in the block settings, scroll down to the Filters section.
    3. Click the ➕ icon next to Filters.
    4. Choose Taxonomies → then you’ll see a Tags field.
    5. Type and add the two tags you want to filter by.
    6. Save your changes.

From there, only posts with those selected tags will appear in the block.

You can find the full guide here with visuals and more tips: Adjust the criteria of the Query Loop.

Let me know how that goes or if you still need help with anything else!

I was told it was in the Query Loop settings, this was a few months ago so I’m not sure if things have changed.

And thank you for the solution, so does that mean I would have to create an individual page for each Query Loop for each tag I want to filter for (i.e. Reviews+Action/Reviews+Horror)?

    @ominousbeep,

Thanks for sharing more details. That option hasn’t been part of the Query Loop block ever, so it sounds like there may have been some confusion at the time. I’m glad you reached out now so we can find a solid solution that works for you!

As for setting up filtered views, it really depends on what you’d like to achieve. Would you prefer to create separate pages (like one for Reviews + Action and another for Reviews + Horror), each showing specific posts? Or would something like a single page with multiple sections, where each section includes its own filtered Query Loop block, be more in line with your vision?

Both are totally doable; it just comes down to what fits your layout and content strategy best. If you let me know which route you’re leaning toward, I’d be happy to walk you through the best way to set that up.

Also, on your current plan, you have access to our 24/7 support team, no need to rely on the forums if you’d rather chat with us directly. You can reach out anytime by following these steps: How to contact support.

Looking forward to hearing what you’d prefer, we’ll make it work either way!

Yeah I used the 24/7 support but it said connecting to agent for over an hour so wasn’t sure what to do.

I originally wanted to just make a drop down to access different types of articles that would also be seperated by genre just via tags on a post but I assume that’s not possible.

Also I wanted to put a query loop on my homepage but not sure if that would be possible or if I’d have to create a new page and set that as my main page?

    @ominousbeep,

I totally understand how that must have felt, waiting for a reply. While we aim to be as responsive as possible, we do experience a high volume of support requests at times, which can delay connection to a live agent. That said, we’re always here to help, and I appreciate your patience!

You absolutely can create a dropdown menu to access different types of articles separated by tags. Here’s how to set it up:

    1. Go to Appearance > Customize > Menus > Main Menu.
    2. Scroll down and click Add Items.
    3. Click the Tags section, which will show all the tags you have on your site.
    4. Add the ones you want to the menu: https://snipboard.io/drTjtH.jpg
    5. To create a dropdown, drag the items slightly to the right under the parent item: https://snipboard.io/sNhmFV.jpg

You can also check out this guide for step-by-step visuals: Create a drop-down menu.

As for adding a Query Loop block on your homepage, yes, that’s totally possible too! You would need to:

    1. Create a new page.
    2. Add and customize your Query Loop block there.
    3. Then go to Settings > Reading and set that page as your homepage.

Here’s a guide to walk you through that: Set a custom homepage.

Feel free to let me know which route you’re leaning toward — dropdowns in the menu, custom homepage with a Query Loop, or even both! I’d be glad to help you build it out.
