unable to follow blogs

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I’m having difficulty following blogs that I visit. When I try to click on the follow button at the bottom of the blog or the button that says “WP Follow [insert name of blog], I can’t. It will show for a few seconds that I’m following after clicking the follow button at the bottom of the website, but it then disappears. If I want to follow a new blog, the only way I can do so is to follow it by email and not all blogs have that widget on their site.

I’m a book blogger, and the book blogging community is very large, so I’d like to be able to follow the blogs of the readers and reviewers who I’m friends with through Twitter and Goodreads, especially since they follow my blog. Can something be done to fix this, please?

Here is, for example, are some of the blogs that I’m having issues following: https://recipeandaread.wordpress.com/
    https://thebeachyreader.wordpress.com/
    https://tornpagesandroses.ca/

    Thank you!

    Stephanie

  • Hi Stephanie –

This feature had been disabled because you tried following too many sites in a short window of time – deemed spam behavior.

I’ve made the necessary change so that you can follow again through Reader. Please remember that Reader is meant to work on an individual level, so the amount of site that you could reasonably keep up with.

I hope that makes sense. If the follows are disabled again we may not be able to fix it again since we’ve discussed the appropriate use of Reader here.

    Reader

    All the best :)

    staff-zinnia,

Thank you so much for fixing the issue. I apologize; I had no idea that I was doing anything that was spam behavior. Sometimes I get many daily follows to my blog and if they are a blog that I find I’m interested in, I follow back (which I know most of my blogger friends do as well or they have a policy of always following back any new followers, which by the way I do not).

It does make sense, but how do you know if you are following too many sites in a short time? Is it more than a few times a day, a week, is there even a specific guideline?

I don’t want the following feature to be disabled again, and I did read the appropriate use of Reader that you linked and although it discusses how to use Reader, it does not discuss spamming policies or how many follows a day, week, etc is too many before you’re banned from following blogs for spamming behavior you weren’t actually engaging in.

I’m not trying to be difficult, but I do think that there need to be better explanations as to what number of follows constitutes spamming behavior as I’ve known other bloggers with this problem. The book blogging community is HUGE and if we have to be afraid to follow each other’s blogs for fear of the feature being disabled, then that’s not quite fair as we all invest a lot of time and energy into our blogs and sharing and communicating with each other via our blogs is an important part of our community.

    Thank you for your help.

  • I think the best option is to keep track of the sites that you want to follow back, and then just do a few at a time…take a break…follow some more. This should keep the spam filter from triggering again.
