Unable to get started with customizing the CSS on my wordpress.com site

I just upgraded to a premium account on wordpress.com site – http://thelooseleashacademy.com/ . I have been trying to make some very basic changes to the CSS using the CSS Customization form. All I am trying to do is to change the background colour of the widget area. I tried adding this snippet to the CSS customization form and Save it. Nothing happens.

Sorted this out. But I am still stuck. I am trying to change the background colour of the site. I *think* I found what I need to do. But it’s not working. It’s driving me nuts. I put in this snippet
