Unable to hide Home page in header menu

  • Unknown's avatar

I created a static front page with a name other than “Home” on my Vigilance themed blog. I understand that many themes are hard coded to display a “Home” link, resulting in two links (in my case, one to “Home” and one to “Pleased To Meet You”) that link to the same thing. How can I remove the “Home” link from appearing in my header menu? I see from WordPress support that I can hide the second link by editing the page and setting another page as the parent. When I do this, though, both the “Home” link and the page under which I’ve hidden “Pleased To Meet You” are colored as “selected” in the header menu when “Home” is selected. Ultimately, I’d like to remove “Home” and just have my static “Pleased To Meet You” page appear. Any suggestions for a rookie would be much appreciated. Thanks.

That is in the underlying theme files which we cannot access, and until the vigilance is updated to support the custom menus, there is no way to get rid of the home link in the navigation.

    Vigilance has been updated!

OMG! I’d missed that I guess – or it didn’t register. That is good news.

OK then tmonson, create a custom menu and simply do not include the home tab.

It worked! Thank you so much for helping out a newbie! I had read every help link about hiding pages, but didn’t even think about creating a custom menu.

You’re welcome, and thanks to Panos for pointing out that Vigilance was updated.

OK .. Im pretty new to this.. But I didnt know that I wasnt suppose to delete the home page .. but I did anyway.. All I think I did was delete the ability to edit the home page.

So now the problem is that I have a page the appears on my site as home but I cant seem to bring back my ability to edit it.

here it is.. and not its just a blank page.. any thoughts on where or how I can restore my home page editablity?

The blank page is your home page where the posts on your blog will be. It only says “Not Found” because you have not written any posts. The other tabs you have take you to your pages:
    About Me
    Contact Zeb
    Facebook
    Testimonials
    Training Rates

Posts and Pages are different from each other:

Note, the title of your blog is a clickable link to your home page.

    @shantd

Oops…. You have now made a custom menu with your About page as your home page. Delete your custom menu, then your home page will be back. Write a post, and your home page will no longer be blank.

I’m using Contempt for my site, http://yourbrainandyou.com. I had
a similar problem and thought I’d found the answer. I went to
Menus and added Home, Blog and About Me, saved that menu, selec-
ted it as primary. — Whereas I used to have Blog, About Me, and
*two* Home pages buttons (to the same thing), I now have only the
Home page and no buttons whatsoever. — I tried to go back to the
original, but no luck. — Help! What do I do now? (The Blog and
About Me pages are still there in my Edit Page screens, so I just
need to somehow reconnect them, and restore the buttons under the
    header.)

Assuming you have not deleted the additional pages, my suggestion is to create a custom menu and then you can put what pages (tabs) you want into it and arrange them as you see fit.

Thank you, thesacredpath. It turns out that I was just impatient.
When I looked at my site today, without having done *anything*
since I posted my question, exactly three buttons showed, and
they all work as they’re supposed to. Yeah!!

You’re welcome. The thing is, they should show up immediately after you create and publish them. The good news though is that they are there now.
