unable to insert a .pdf file

  I’ve read – about a thousand times! – the WordPress post about how to do this.
  I can’t make it work.
  The .pdf is uploaded into my Media Library, but when I select it and click the Insert into Post button, all that happens is that the title of the .pdf appears in the post, without any link.
  I’m going bonkers, here! can anybody help, please?
