Unable to insert GIF into post

I am unable to insert GIFs into posts. These GIFs are functional in all other situations (social media, GIF hosting sites, viewed in a browser, etc.).

When using the ‘Add Media’ button to upload the GIFs, I receive an ‘HTTP error.’ However, I was able to upload GIFs to the Media Library by using a combination of FileZilla and the ‘Add From Server’ plugin by Dion Hulse. The GIF appears as a generic placeholder image in the Media Library. The attachment details list the file size, but do not show the dimensions of the GIF.

When added to a post, it does not display in either the edit page or the preview of the page. It is as if it has not been added at all. This is true of all GIFs I have tried from various sources. I’m not sure if it is relevant, but my site is hosted by HostGator.

I’m in the process of creating a new series of posts for my site which rely heavily on my own GIFs and am at a loss of how to proceed. Please help.

  • Hi there,

Yes, I’m afraid it is relevant that your site is hosted by HostGator :-)
This forum is dedicated to helping users who host their sites on WordPress.com. You should try asking help on WordPress.org forums for self-hosted version of WordPress:

Also, you should ask HostGator support to help you as this sounds like something they can help with.
