  Noted that I can link my domain for free, but I couldn’t do that as the page kept ask for the paid plans

  While you can purchase a domain without a plan or purchase a domain elsewhere, in order to have your domain be your primary domain here at WordPress.com you need a paid plan. Otherwise your domain will redirect to your free *.wordpress.com URL.
