  I set an account up a few years ago, and cannot remember the password and think the email account has shut down. Therefore I cannot give the proofs requested (as I would have the primary email account and could just use the forgot password option). Is there any way to get my account back?

  The only way to regain access to the account is with proof of ownership. Please take a look at (and submit) the Account Recovery form:
