Unable to log out

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello

In last 2 days I cannot log out of my wordpress.com blog. A black line remains across the top, which theoretically indicates I am still logged in to it. The black line has My Sites and Reader on the left side, and a white box with Write, my Gravatar and a white image of a Bell on the right side.

When I press on my gravatar, which would normally bring down a drop box, allowing me to sign out – instead I get directed to a different screen, from which it does I can sign out, but when I do up comes a blue screen, with white letters on, saying :

Be ready whenever, wherever inspiration strikes.
Get WordPress apps for any device.

It seems to want my phone number at that point. I’ve never seen that screen before.

Then when I bring up a new browser tab, call up my blog again – I still have the black line across the top, so I press my gravatar so as to log out, but this time I get a sign in window (the usual one).

So I sign in to my blog, then I have to do a very roundabout way of getting back to my normal screen, ie (1) I press My Sites, then (2) I click on what comes up to indicate my blog, CanningAccountability, then I select WP Admin, and finally I get on to a screen I can use to write posts, etc.

But then when I try to sign out, I go right back to the problem I have just detailed. Whatever has happened, I’ve been stopped, literally, from simply signing out, logging out, of my blog simply, like I’ve always done.

Can you help me fix the problem, please? Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • @dianajr161 can you confirm what browser and device you are using? I’ve a similar report with Chromebook recently. Do you have any browser extensions installed that could be interfering?

    Hi supernovia

I use Chrome, which I recently re-loaded as like quite a few people I was having trouble with getting my history to clear. That’s fixed, and reloading Chrome took me back to basic version. So that occurred in the last 7-10 days. My probs with not being able to log out occurred in last 2-3 days.

    I use a desktop computer.

I checked my extensions, virtually all had been there for ages but I had added a new one recently which is one of those concentration apps, but for desktops (set a timer, grow a tree in that time, if you goof off you will kill the tree – type apps). That was applied to my computer as an extension probably about two weeks ago. I’ve deleted it today.

Other than that, nothing special has occurred. I have noticed, however, that whilst I cannot log out, the situation does clear itself when the computer is shut down. So, upon re-opening the blog is logged out of.

It’s not ideal, so I’d still appreciate knowing if WordPress can appraise me of why its happening. Thanks for your time.

  • That really is weird. If you log out, then close the browser and re-open it, does the admin bar still appear?

Hi, ok, I just went through logging out, then closing browser. On reopening browser black bar still there.

Then I though I would clear history, close browser, reopen. The black bar was gone at that point.

Upon logging in, then trying to log out of the blog at this point, the same problem returned. Couldn’t log out, black bar remains at top.

I repeated all of the above. Closing browser, clearing cache removes the black bar, but it returns as soon as you use blog again, and seek to log out.

  • One more test if you would. I haven’t been able to duplicate this here, though we’re hoping for clues:

If you use an incognito window, or a different “person” for Chrome (which can usually get rid of other extensions) does the black bar go away?

Noting, closing an incognito window will automatically clear history and cookies, so don’t close that one. Just refresh to see if the black bar goes away there.

Can you let us know too what operating system you’re using?

So sorry! Have exams over weekend so studying like mad. Have not tried your next suggestion yet. Thanks so much for heads up, but just need a few days.

  • No problem. Let us know here once you’re able to test this.

And good luck with your exams!

    Hi <href=”https://en.forums.wordpress.com/users/supernovia/”>supernovia”,

I’ve recently been having the same experience – when I log out, a black bar (My Sites, My Reader, etc.) continues to be displayed, as if I’m still logged in. Any interaction then sends me to the standard log in dialogue box.

If I restart my browser, the black bar is gone.

If I clearing my cache, the black bar goes away.

I’m using Brave Version 0.65.118 Chromium: 75.0.3770.80 (Official Build) (64-bit), on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6.

I see that dianajr161 has conveyed a similar situation, but with a different browser…wondering about a solution?

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

  • First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

If it is, please do these two things:

    1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.

    2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.

Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

    Hi,

I’m using a mid-2010 iMac with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6.

    Browsers used include –
Brave Version 0.65.118 Chromium: 75.0.3770.80 (Official Build) (64-bit) – newest.
    Safari Version 12.1.1 (13607.2.6.1.2)

Same issue with both browsers – when I log out, a black bar remains.

If I restart either browser, or if I clear the cache and cookies in either browser, the black bar is removed.

In Safari, disabling an older AdBlock extension did remove the black bar!

In Brave, disabling extensions (WebTorrent, Hangouts) had no effect.

    Thanks.

  • Hm, ok please report that false-positive to your Safari AdBlock extension.

As for Brave, is the issue also gone if you turn off ad blocking? (I suspect both adblock systems may run off of the same blocklist)
