unable to login to admin, unless I use a database backup of 2 days ago

  We keep getting a prompt to login everytime we access wp-admin of our wordpress site. It sometimes does proceed, but once logged in, it logs out within a couple of interactions.

  Having debugged the problem, we reverted to a copy of the database that is 2 days old. And login works.

  What are the specific tables in wordpress that can control login / session related data ?
