Unable to remove an administrator from the account

I would like to remove an ex-empoloyee with administrator privileges. When I try to do so I get an error. Please advise how this can be achieved.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @icetimetv – Only the administrator of the site will be able to remove a user. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator
If you scroll down you will find the instructions to remove a user. -
Hi lizkarkoski, many thanks for your reply.
I am already an administrator. I’ve tried changing their role to a contributor or an author with a view to latterly removing their account but I also get an error.
The error I get is “There was an error deleting @usernamehere”. The error I get when trying to change their role is “There was an error updating @usernamehere”.
I wasn’t the original administrator on the account, my role was upgraded to be administrator. The original administrator now has nothing to do with the company and I wish to remove them. It seems like there’s something to do with the fact that they were the original account holder that is stopping me from removing them.
Any suggestions?

Are you able to contact the owner of the site? The best way to go forward, would be for them to relinquish ownership of it to you, or another member of your team. They can transfer ownership to you with these instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/transferring-a-site-to-another-wordpress-com-account/
