Unable to renew domain within 8 days expiration

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello. I’m having trouble renewing my domain that expired 8 days ago. I read through all the support documents and think I understand I have a 10 day to two week grace period to hopefully get it back without a giant hassle. I cannot seem to find a link to pay for the renewal.

Part of the problem may have been that the WHOIS contact info was old, due to changes in the structure of the organization. I have updated that information now to be current.

Can someone please help me? arrowmontblog.com is the domain I need to purchase.

    Thank you

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Go to the front page of the site in question and you should see a button on the expired domain overlay that will allow anyone to renew the domain name. Click on the link to renew the domain.

Thanks for responding justjennifer – I appreciate your help. I have tried clicking that link many times and can’t seem to figure out how to actually pay for the renewal. It takes me to the “My Upgrades” page. I upgraded to premium for the 14 day trial to see if that would make a difference, but it hasn’t. When I go to the “My Domains” page it just says arrowmontblog.com is expired and I can’t find any place to renew it. What am I doing wrong, I’m driving myself crazy!

Anyone from wordpress care to comment or help on this please?

I’d hoped that Staff might have responded to the “modlook” tag on this post by now, and since you’ve already bumped the thread (which essentially pushes it down in their queue), let’s see if we can work this out.

    1. Are you logged in with the username that originally purchased the custom domain upgrade? If not, you must log in with that username.

    2. If you are logged in with the correct username, when you go to your site’s Dashboard>Store>My Upgrades, do you see the custom domain upgrade there?

    3. If you are logged in to WPcom but not logged in with the username account that purchased that custom domain, clicking on the button in the expired domain overlay should bring you to a page that looks like this screenshot.

If you are not seeing that, try logging out and clearing your cache and cookies. Alternately use a different browser, but log in to WPcom first.

justjennifer – thank you so much for your help. i am not logged in with the original username that bought the custom domain, nor do i have that information. when i am logged in with my username, i do get taken to the page that your screenshot shows, except there is no payment option underneath it. i have cleared cookies and cache. i’ll go try on a different browser right now and see if that helps!

unfortunately using a different browser did not help. i can see if i can track down the original username and password, but i doubt i’ll be successful. any other suggestions?

    Hi @arrowmontcomm,

i am not logged in with the original username that bought the custom domain, nor do i have that information.

This is the issue here. The domain is registered under a different user account at WordPress.com. In order to renew the domain, we’ll need to do one of the following two things:

    1. You’ll need to login under the correct user account (which doesn’t sound promising currently)

    2. If you have access to the email address originally used for the account that registered the domain, you can submit an email to help@wordpress.com asking for the domain to be transferred to your current account (arrowmontcomm).

Would either of those options work?

@jeremeylduvall – barring that, why is arrowmontcomm unable to purchase the domain using the gift option on the expired domain overlay?

  • Unknown's avatar

thanks @jeremyduvall. i will try to get the domain transferred – maybe that will work. otherwise i’m still open for anyone from wordpress staff or others to help on this. thank you!

@justjennifer – Ah, great reminder! I forgot about that. @arrowmontcomm, if you visit the site while logged in under your current account, you should see the option to renew the domain as a gift as shown here:

    http://d.pr/i/16DT7

You’ll need to be logged in under any WordPress.com account for this. Can you let me know if you see this option?

  • Unknown's avatar

@jeremyduvall @justjennifer – i have tried that option, but when i click it it goes to the domain page but there is no payment option to actually renew. it just says expired. i can edit the account information, but nothing else.

I confirmed this same behavior. I thought it acted this way because you had a Premium bundle trial on your account. Then, I thought it might be due to the fact that you’re actually a user on the blog, but when I added myself as a test, I still received the screen that allowed me to pay for the upgrade. I’m not quite sure why this is causing so much trouble. I’m checking on it now!

Hooray! Nice to wake up and see that the domain is now working for me. (screenshot) Going to go celebrate with another cuppa.
