Unable to set a featured image to my home page – its a template?

I think I messed up somehow. I want to add a featured image to the homepage settings so when I share the site URL on social, it pulls a nice image to display. But when I go into edit for the home page, it shows as a template, not a page, and there isn’t any option to set a featured image for it. If I add a featured image block, it just adds in a greyed out block to the template but still doesn’t give me an option to add a featured image in the settings.

Now I have my home page as a template, I thought I would just copy it and make it a new page based on the template – but I can’t find how to do that either. If I go to add a new page I can’t see where I add a new page based on the Home Template. I set up a blank page and try to apply a template, but the only option is to add a new one or edit the template, not use the existing home page template to create an identical page. I’m really stuck.
I really don’t want to recreate the homepage from scratch again so what do I do?

I just gave up and created a new page from scratch, the same as the home page template, and then set that as the home page.
