Purchasing a custom domain through WordPress.com is different from using a self-hosted installation of WordPress, available at http://wordpress.org/
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two separate entities:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/Currently, you blog is hosted on WordPress.com. To switch over to a WordPress.org site, you’ll need to self-host your site, which means you’ll need to purchase your own hosting. We have hosting recommendations available here, if you’re interested:

Thanks for your reply !
So I have signed up for Bluehost and changed the nameservers on my wordpress.com account to Bluehost’s . What else do I need to do to get access to plugins and theme uploads ?

It seems that the domain name now redirects to your new hosting. Please review this guide to learn more about WordPress.org and it’s functionalities.
