Unable to update WHOIS details

Hi, hoping someone can help, I am having a real issue and support are so slow to respond that after 3 days I have got nowhere.
Our site is currently down, the reason being related to the following message:
“You must respond to the ICANN email to verify your domain email address or your domain will stop working. Check your contact information is correct below.”
However, the email we need to respond to is nolonger in use and when I try and update it I get the following error message.
“Unable to update WHOIS details”
Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks for getting in touch. I took a look at your support history and I don’t show any recent support requests, so I’m not sure where you were in contact with us, but no worries, we can get you sorted here.
It looks like there was a pending contact update that was never confirmed, so it effectively prevented any additional updates. I went ahead and cleared that out for you and you should be able to enter the verification again by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/update-contact-information/#change-your-domain-contact-information
NOTE: You will be sent an email with a link to confirm the change of email, so make sure you look for that email and click to verify the change which will remove the suspension.

Hi, Thank you for coming back to me. I have tried to follow the instructions given above, however when I try to update the details all I get back is an error message “Unable to update WHOIS details”. I have been in contact with support via email but don’t seem to be getting anywhere.

Thank you for your feedback, @newearswickfolkhall. I’d like to just clarify what you have tried. Did you try access the domain contact information through this option (here is our guide: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/update-contact-information/ )?

Did you then experience the error when you attempted to save the updated contact details? If this is the case, please would you try signing into WordPress.com using an Incognito or Private browser window, and then attempting to update the domain contact details in that Incognito or Private browser window.

Hi, I have been accessing this way and not been able to update – I just get the error message. I have tried to do so in incognito mode too and that hasn’t worked either.
