Howdy!
Thanks for reaching out about your trouble.
What is the custom domain URL that you are trying to register? There can only be one owner of a domain. It is possible that someone else already owns the one you are looking to register.
I have attempted roughly 10 times and it will not work.
Can you explain the steps that you are taking? Are you receiving an error message?
It may help to clear your browser cache. Here are the step-by-step instructions to help you do that.
Then, go here and try to add
WordPress.com Personal Plan.Let me know if this works.

I have already registered the domain that I purchased through godaddy.com so when people into my custom url it goes directly to my wordpress site.
I just go to plans- upgrade and it says unable to register because the domain is already being used.

Please try these steps.
Start here. Click the blue button labeled, Start With Personal.
You will need to work through a few design prompts. When you get to step 4, titled, Let’s Find a Domain, look below the big white search box for the link, Already own a domain? Click on that link.
On the next screen, add your GoDaddy domain and click the blue Add button to the right.
If this does not work please share the domain so that I can take a closer look.

This prompted me to setup an entirely new blog- which I already have a free existing account. Which was not what I wanted to do. My goal is to map my purchased domain to my existing WordPress site. Currently, when people go to my custom domain name, it changes the title to wordpress in the URL, and I want it to stay as my custom domain URL

Please share the custom domain URL that you need help with. I’ll be able to take a closer look with that information.
Load this page, then click on the WordPress.com site that you are going to connect your custom domain to.
From the menu on top of that page, click Domains > Add Domain. Next, scroll down until you see the last option labeled, “Already own a domain?”. Enter the domain and click Add from the right side of the text box. The step-by-step instructions are in this guide.
Once the mapping is configured you’ll want to set the custom domain as your primary domain. It only takes a few clicks to do this, here are the instructions.
