Unable to use a wordpress.com subdomain reserved for my username
-
Greetings,
I read in several places that once I register with WordPress.com, a <username>.wordpress.com domain is reserved for my use. However, when I try to create a new site, entering ‘kempniu’ in the domain field in step 2 causes ‘kempniublog.wordpress.com’ to be suggested. I would like to use the domain ‘kempniu.wordpress.com’, but I’ve been unable to find a way to do so.
It could have something to do with the fact that I originally registered with WordPress.com once it became mandatory to use Gravatar. Perhaps something was automatically created for me back then and I intentionally removed it because I just wanted to use Gravatar, not start a blog. Just a wild guess, though.

Hi kempniu,
It seems it’s related with you previously registering and creating “kempniu.wordpress.com” Unfortunately, if you’ve deleted that blog, you cannot recycle the name anymore. You can find more information here:
-
1. Every wordpress.com username account is a gravatar account.
2. The blog has not been deleted.https://kempniu.wordpress.com doesn’t exist The address kempniu.wordpress.com cannot be registered. Sorry, that site is reserved!
When we register a username account the matching blog is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account.
If and only if you have registered the matching username account log out, clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies. Then you log in under the correct username account and as the blog is reserved for you and you will register it after logging in under the correct username account.
https://signup.wordpress.com/signup/?user=1However, if you changed your username then the blog URL will not be available for use under the new username account.
In that case you can register another .wordpress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
Then if you wish to you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade because it does not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is when you are domain mapping.

Thanks, timethief! While your tips didn’t solve my problem directly, it is thanks to you that I figured out how to accomplish what I wanted. I simply… clicked the https://kempniu.wordpress.com/ link. It then asked me “Do you want to register kempniu.wordpress.com?”. I clicked that link and then, using a completely different interface than the one available under the “Create site” link in my dashboard, I was able to register kempniu.wordpress.com. An obscure procedure to say the least. Hopefully this post will help posterity in figuring it out.
