If you want to remove an image or other file from your media library, then you must do more than just removing it from a post or page.
dashboard—>media—>library—>delete
Note that if you remove an image (or file) from your media library then it will be deleted from all posts on your site which used that image (file).

Thanks for your prompt response.
But thar did not answer my question.
When I remove an image from a post, it still shows as attached to the post in the media library. I have removed a lot of images from posts and now don’t have a mechanism in the media library to know which ones were removed! i. e. The unattached link does not show the unattached images.

If you upload images (or files) while you are editing a post or page, then they will be attached to that post or page. You cannot “un-attach” an image from a post or page.
This does not mean that because they are “attached” to a specific post or page that those images cannot be used again without re-uploading them. You can use any image again and again once it’s been added to your media library.
Can you be more specific about what you want to accomplish?

What you said make sense except this part:
You cannot “un-attach” an image from a post or page.I think i can do it by simply removing the reference to the image from the post (ie deleting it). What i want to achieve : Simply I just want to identify an image which is not attached to a post any more, in order to remove it permanently.

Even if you take it out of a post, it is still “attached” to the post. But you can permanently delete even images that are still IN a post. People do it all the time.

Hi raincoaster
(Even if you take it out of a post, it is still “attached” to the post)
That is issue I am trying to resolve. I think WP have a good reason for that. It could be due to versioning functionality.

You can upload images directly to the media library. That would mean that they would not be attached to any post or page.
The only way to un-attach an image from a post or page is to delete that post or page. It can take some time for the data to be cleared from servers, but you can re-write the post or page again then add images from the media library after a few days (not sure how long clearing would take).
But that would be like biting off your nose to spite your face. Deleting posts and pages, then adding them again, would mean the the search engines would return 404 not found errors for the deleted posts/pages.
You’d then have to wait for Google et al to re-index your site…
I’m still not understanding why it concerns you whether an image is attached to a post or not? On wp.org, with some plugins, it might matter, but on WordPress.com I can’t see why whether an image is attached to a post or not matters? Can you explain?

As raincoaster said,

If you don’t want those images anymore, then simply delete them.
My caution was about an image which you may have used on more than one post. If you delete that image from your library then it will disappear from all the places you used it on your site.

Thank you all for your feedback
I have uploaded many articles written by my late father, as images. Later on we started to remove the scanned image from each post and type them as text.
We did not want to delete the posts because we wanted to maintain post parameters such as date, tags, etc.
I thought that after removing the image link from the post, it would be easier for me to know how many posts are still having articles as images.
I hope that answers your question 1tess.

Hi there, I have the opposite problem – when I check Media Liberty and Unattached images – they are attached to a post, I would love to remove all images that I haven’t used in a post to free up space, but when I remove the unattached images, my post loses their images. Not all of them. I have checked by searching by image title to see if I have duplicates in my library, but there isn’t – so how can it not be attached if it’s used in a post.
