Unauthorized Sponsored Content link on my blogs.

    I just noticed that there is a link called ‘Sponsored Content’ towards the bottom of my blog pages. Along with a clickable arrow that pops up a company called ‘Outbrain’. What is this?? I’ve never heard of a company called Outbrain, and didn’t authorize any company to advertise on my blog pages. Why is this showing up on my blogs and what is it?

    To keep your free site for free, wordpress.com shows ads on free sites. If you don’t want ads on your site, you must upgrade to the WordPress pro Plan – https://wordpress.com/pricing/ – or buy the No-Ads upgrade – https://wordpress.com/support/add-ons/#no-ads

    Excuse me for getting involved in the conversation, but I’m interested in the topic. Free plan users already know that their sites are ad-supported. But Outbrain has nothing to do with WordPress.com, has it? Usually the advertising was about products related to WordPress.com

    Could it be a browser extension that is infecting the page with advertising that does not come from WordPress.com?

    If so, other visitors would not see said advertisement unless they had the same problem

    Here’s an earlier forum reply from WordPress.com staff that gives some context:

    The “Sponsored Content” ads by Outbrain are part of the advertising that appears on free sites on WordPress.com. These display below the first post on the front page, and at the bottom of posts in the single-post view, same as regular WordPress.com ads.

    If you think a specific ad is inappropriate, please take a screenshot of the ad, and send that, along with the URL the ad links to, via the form at https://wordpress.com/support/about-these-ads/. Then our ads team can review the ad, and follow up with Outbrain if needed.

    In general, ad-supported free and Starter plan sites show advertising. What is shown to a site visitor depends on their browsing habits and location. More about this here: https://wordpress.com/support/no-ads/
