Understanding Catagories widget, how does it work?

I am trying to put two sections of categories on my blog/webpage. When I make the second category widget it shows all the categories that are also in the first. How can you make two categories widgets that handle totally different categories. Example: category widget name:Media – categories; Photos, Fly tying vids, Fly fishing vids, instructional vids. Second category widget name: News – categories; Events, Stream conditions. I am getting all the categories from the first widget in the second. Someone please help I am losing my hair as we speak. thanks

We are required to ask for the URL for the blog to which you refer every time you post to the forum. Please post it starting with http://Then if you wish you can link your wordpress.com username to your wordpress.com blog so you don’t get asked again. > Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile -> then scroll down to ‘contact info’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your wordpress.com blog and “save changes”.

Okay I had already filled in all this info on the >Dashboard->Users->Your Profile-> page. First thing I created a blog on bluehost.com using wordpress. The website URL is http://www.jwflyfishing.com. I think this is causing problems with me linking things to my blog, like flickr for example and now with linking it to wordpress.com. What to heck I am no idiot but the learning curve here is a bit of a problem here. thanks again for any and all help. sincerely, quite lost

Do you see how the bottom of your theme says “Powered by WordPress”? That means it’s a wordpress.org blog. Well, this is the wordpress.com support forum. We run on different software than you have running on your blogs and guess what? We cannot help you here at all. You are posting to the wrong forum. You must post here > http://wordpress.org/support/

I am new to this and the Category Widget is driving me mad!!!
Its really quite simple on the video for Category Widget and Categories but I am obviously missing something!!!
The category widget shows on my block (I choose drop down list to show my categories). I have created the categories for this list.
They dont show!! Only thing on the drop down list is none or uncategorized.
Help!

I can see the category widget fine (6 categories, 1 post each), but as a list, not a dropdown… Keep in mind that the widget will only show non-empty categories.

Exactly. The categories widget cannot display all categories until you assign each one of the categories to at least one post and publish those post(s).
