Understanding "Site Redirect" from wordpress.com to wordpress.org
-
Hello:
I have a website (spiritual-artwork.org) powered by wordpress.org, which I moved sometime back from spiritualartwork.wordpress.com; both are active websites.
So far I have refrained from using the “Site Redirect” feature as I assumed that because I update my wordpress.org account more frequently, most traffic from search engines will also automatically redirect to wordpress.org website…however to my surprise that did not happen and I still get most of my traffic/ visitors I get in my wordpress.com account which I update relatively less frequently.
My questions related to the above are as follows:
Q1. From my above experience, is wordpress.com more search engine friendly than wordpress.org? Please ignore this question if its not that straight forward to answer! :)
Q2. If I use “Site Redirect” feature offered by WordPress.com, what will then happen to my wordpress.com account…I can still access it or would I lose it forever?
Q3. What happens after 1 year of “Site Redirect” subscription expires?
Q4. Will the “Site Redirect” only redirect to website or also can redirect to a specific post?
Thank you for your help and time. I really appreciate it.
Manish

1) yes, by far.
2) Your WP.com account still exists but you won’t be able to look at the blog directly, you’ll have to sign in and then you can get to the dashboard.
3) You shouldn’t need it more than six or eight months anyway. The traffic should have gotten the idea by then, and all your search engine juice will be calculated form the new site, not the old one.
4) It is designed to redirect site wide, so if someone is looking for, say, your post on pink hat cockades on the old blog, it’ll go to the same post on the new blog.

Raincoaster:
Thanks for the feedback.
Just one comment- That’s pretty incredible that the visitor would be able to go to the same post they intended from wordpress.com. I guess I had some reserveations as my index for .org is not same as .com site. But this is helpful information …makes me feel happy to use this feature of site directing without any doubts :)
Thanks again my friend,
Manish

You’re welcome. As long as your permalink structure is the same on your new blog as your old, the links will still work. If they don’t, because you changed the links, they will go to a 404 page on the new blog.

Thanks Raincoaster.
I am not a web-designing expert hence unable to full understand whether I did (or not) change the permalink structure. Basically, same posts is shown on my .org website but published on a different day. If that can cause problem, then I assume I should update 404 Page to make it more user-friendly.

I apologies for my above ignorance.
I have now spent a few minutes reading more on premalink…
From what I read, wordpress.com does not allow to change premalink and the format universally used on wordpress.com account is: http://accountname.wordpress.com/Year/Month/Date/sample-post/
Does this mean if I change the format of my permalink on my wordpress.org account to same format, the search engine will reach the accurate post?
However, what if I posted same post on a different date on my .org account than on my .com wordpress account….does this matter? If yes, then would changing the post date on either of the two sites (i.e. using same date) will make link work reliably?
Thank you for your patience, which I humbly appreciate.
Best wishes.
