understanding tags

  • Unknown's avatar

When I add a tag to a post (for example, a post on county commissioners has tag “Winston-Salem”) I don’t want that tag to show up on unrelated posts. I have a post about technology, with a “technology” tag, but I don’t want “technology” to show up on my posts about the environment.
How do I confine the tags to the relevant posts?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The site referenced with your name is not a blog – we need the URL of the blog in question at WordPress.COM beginning with http to help us give you accurate help.

Thanks – In my personal settings, I have this
    http://helenofmarlowe.wordpress.com/
in the blank that says “primary blog” so I thought that
    would show up.

Tags (and categories) are assigned to posts by the bloggers in question. They appear ONLY on the posts that bloggers assign to them.

Perhaps then someone can tell me what I’m doing wrong.
When I go to my latest post, I see, to the right, tags that have nothing to do with this post. I go to edit my latest post, and I add “garden”. I’ve done that three or four times now, and I save it each time, but it does not show up.
My latest post *does* have tags meant for another post, but does not have the “garden” (or other) tags I typed in for this post.
I read the links in the reply above, and I am doing it the way it’s described.
    What am I doing wrong?

The Tags at the top of the Sidebar are part of the “Tags” Widget – those are all the tags that you have for your site – works the same as the Category list right below it –

Those Tags are NOT related to the Post – you will have the same Tags no matter what Post you are looking at – that Widget is designed to help your visitors find other Posts related to the Tags as is the list of Categories below it.

I don’t know if the Tags Widget is one of the default widgets for your Theme – if it is just add the Widgets you want to the Sidebar (the first Widget you add will replace the default Widgets) Dashboard >> Appearance >> Widgets

    I’m trying to understand this.
I added “garden” to my latest post. Several times. It doesn’t show up.
But if it did show up, I’m wondering now — how would it help me to find the
posts tagged “garden” if the tag doesn’t actually go with the particular post?
I mean, if the tags are not related to a particular post, how does clicking on
the tag help to find a particular post?
Sorry for being slow here — I guess I’m used to things like Flickr, where the tag
goes with the related item, so I’m trying to figure this out.

You associate the Tags with your Post either at the time you write your Post or when you Edit it.

This should walk you through adding tags: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/

However I see that you have added Tags to most if not all of your Posts.

I think a Tag will not show up unless you have at least one Post associated with it – so you could add a Tag in the Tag list and it will not be used or show on a list of Tags to your regular visitors until the Tag is used.

You have associated Tags with your Posts so I am a bit confused on your question – I can click on the Tag list at the top of the Sidebar and read several different Posts, all grouped by the Tags you have added to the Posts.

When I was exploring your blog, I noticed something on your current post. Not only are there no tags associated with it, you’ve filed it under “uncategorized” and that category is not a clickable link.

On other posts, I can click the category links and they work as they should.

Also, you’re right – the “garden” tag isn’t showing up.

I don’t know anything about your theme, but there is one other thing you might check. With my theme, to add a tag or category I have to click the “add” button, enter the term, and then click “add” again. It didn’t function this way in the past, and before I figured it out I sometimes didn’t add the tags I wanted.

It might be something for you to double check. The fact that you’ve filed your current post under “uncategorized” while that link isn’t clickable and “uncategorized” doesn’t show up in your category cloud suggests you might have missed a step in adding it. It’s worth double-checking, anyhow.

Can someone explain to me what the tags are for? i keep seeing them pop up at the bottom of my posts, sometimes it directly relates to what I’m writing about and sometimes not. What is the purpose of these tags? Does it help at all?

    @krste24

i keep seeing them pop up at the bottom of my posts, sometimes it directly relates to what I’m writing about and sometimes not.

Those aren’t tags. those are “possibly related posts” and you can disable them ig you wish. Dashboard > Appearance > Extras
__ Hide related links on this blog, which means this blog won’t show up on other blogs or get traffic that way
    Click “Update Extras”

When it comes to tagging your content this is a support entry that will be helpful.

Tags provide a useful way to group related posts together, and to quickly tell readers what a post is about. Tags also make it easier for people to find your content. Tags are similar to, but more specific than, categories. The use of tags is completely optional. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/

I thought I saw where I could do this yesterday, but now I can’t find it again. Is there a way to have the tags, like content warnings, put at the top of the post rather than the bottom?

    @drakeluvr
Please post the URL for the blog in question starting with http://

Note that some themes display tags at the top of posts and some display them at the bottom of posts. I believe the only way that may be changed on a given theme would be through purchasing and CSS upgrade and editing the CSS stylesheet. You can try before you buy here > Appearance > Edit CSS
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/

    Add Custom CSS
