Unethical to Force the Block Editor

One business model is to offer better features, at a cost, to try and compel users to upgrade. This is an ethical business model.

Another is to remove features that users have become used to, and signed up for, to force them to pay to get them back. This is an unethical business model.

Forcing free users to sign up to get back the ‘classic’ WordPress editor is the latter, and highly unethical. Yes you try and hide the fact it is a downgrade, a strongarm tactic, by implying the Gutenberg editor is better, and we should get used to it, and users who want to old one are just used to that one.

I am sorry, that is plausible deniability. It is clear why you did this, and it frankly stinks.

I have been a WordPress user for well over a decade now, and you have me, and all my content, ‘trapped’. You are holding my content, my platform, and my name, hostage. You should really allow us… all your users that through thousands of hours of hard work which made your platform a success… simply edit our blogs the way we choose.

An apology would be nice, but I would accept a simple choice to the ‘classic’ editor as a substitute. It would be the right thing to do.

    Rich.

  • Hello Rich,

Many thanks for reaching out with your concerns.

Can I check where you’ve read that you need to upgrade in order to access the classic editor please?

The reason why I ask is because the classic editor has been deprecated.

Also, for all plans, you are able to navigate to WP Admin > Posts > hover a post to edit and click “classic editor” (WP Admin Editor) – is this what you’re trying to do?

    Many thanks in advance.
