Unexpected cursor location changes
-
When I click somewhere when editing a document to make a comment, it takes me somewhere completely different, perhaps at the top of the document, which is annoying when I am editing a large post.
My blog is mainly a travel blog and my last post had 38 images (as separate images) and 900 words.
Say I open a post to continue editing it. I use the mouse to drag down the “border tab” to where I want to be in the document, then I click in the document where I want to edit. It takes me to the top of the document. Then if I go back and click where I want to edit again, it stays where it should. But also if I just click a couple of times in nearby places, it may take me back to the top again.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there!
Which browser do you use? You can copy the details from https://www.whatismybrowser.com/.
Does it still happen if you try a different one? Also, remember that with your plan, you can access Live Chat directly via https://wordpress.com/help/contact. That way, you can get help faster.

Hi fresatomica!
I use Firefox. I have the same problem trying Chrome and Microsoft Edge.
Thanks for the info about direct live chat. This issue is not urgent though and I have already made my blog post for this week.

Howdy! Are you by chance using a popup blocker of any kind on your computer and/or in each of your web browsers?
If you are, could you try disabling those, restarting your computer and browsers and then trying again to see if the issue does not go away?

Hi deancroyal
I’ve never knowingly engaged a pop-up blocker in FireFox and I very seldom use Chrome and never use Microsoft Edge (neither are colour managed) so they are completely default.

What if you try to edit your post in a “private window” in Firefox. This is a window that will load without any extensions, browser cache, cookies, etc.
To access that go to File>Open Private Window in Firefox then go to https://wordpress.com to log in to your account and access the page editor. If you try this in a private window in Firefox, does your cursor exhibit the same strange behavior again?
Also since you have Chrome, we’d like you to try there if that is OK. Please try editing the same post in Chrome and let us know if the cursor issue appears there, or is a Firefox-only problem.
I understand that Chrome is not your usual browser, the purpose of the test is to let us know if the issue is only with Firefox, or one that affects any browser and thus a broader issue. Thanks for the additional info, it helps us know where to look next!

It still happens in a private window and I previously tried it in Chrome and it also happens there.

I accessed your account and opened a couple of posts to see what’s happening. I noticed that every time I open a post and click somewhere in the text, I’m taken to another place in the document. With the second click, though, I end up exactly where I want, and this happens with any other click afterward.
Is that what happens when you’re trying to write your posts?I also noticed you’re using the Classic Block, so I wonder if this is some bug related to that Block. If you create a test post using Paragraph Block instead, does the issue persist?

Hi fresatomica
I found an old sample post called “Welcome to the Gutenburg Editor” and it does not happen with that. So it is probably a consequence of recent changes to the Classic editor. That doesn’t persuade me to change though. If necessary I will have to live with it.
This is my current process and why I use the Classic Editor:
My average post currently is around 30 images (posted separately) and 500 to 1,000 words, sometimes more. I select all the images at once from my media library. As far as I can work out, with the block editor you can only select images one at a time, which is far more time consuming.
I then copy the HTML to Word and run a Word macro I have created to resize the images so they have a constant area on the page (apart from long panoramas). With the block editor you can go through image by image and resize to 25%, 50% or 75% but this is far too coarse for my preferences.
After copying the modified HTML back, I edit an image in the visual editor, centre it, specify an image border, insert tags in Alternative Text and CSS Image Class, and specify to “open link in a new tab”. Then I copy the HTML this creates to the other images. As far as I can work out, the Block Editor does not offer image borders or opening images in a new tab.
So unless I misunderstand, I am not tempted by the Block Editor for those reasons. I have seen comments both that the Classic Editor will stay and that it will be removed. I would be dismayed if the Classic Editor disappears and this means I am forced to spend much more time on my posts and have less functionality.
In terms of the specific issue of this thread, this behaviour appears to be a side-effect of recent changes to the Classic Editor. It would be good if it can be found and rectified, otherwise I will make do.

Classic Editor is not really being updated, rather it’s being retired, but I’m curious to know if this happens to you also on posts created from 0 in the editor (without copy-pasting HTML).
Would you be willing to try that?
As for the Block Editor, you can select multiple images when adding a Gallery Block. There are actually few different gallery styles:
https://wordpress.com/support/images/.
If your issue is that you would like to add all the images and then write text in between them, then yes, you would need to add a single Image Block for every image.
You can also resize images by holding and dragging one of the edges.
Images can be set to open as file or as attachment page:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#link-settings.

I tried it without copy-pasting HTML, and it was the same.
Yes, I do want to write text between each image. That’s going to be very time-consuming if I have to insert each image individually.
Resizing by dragging the edges won’t give me a constant area for each image. I’d still want to run the (probably modified) macro as long as that can still work.
If I use Link Settings to hyperlink to the original media file (presumably therefore at full size), is that the same as “opening a link in a new tab” in the Classical Editor?
Am I right that the block editor does not offer image borders? Or does it require adding a CSS class? If so, how would I do that for say a 4 pixel border? (Hmmm. Though perhaps I can find a Lightroom Add-On to generate the borders on export).

Hello there,

Yes, this is possible. When adding a link, you would need to click on the arrow seen here to access that option: https://d.pr/i/4VbZQK

That’s correct, you would to need CSS to make this possible. This can actually be a one time job, if adding a CSS class to image options: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/image-block/#advanced
I hope this helps.
