unfollow a large number of blogs
-
It appears that the following recent posts missed by my Reader are on self-hosted WordPress.org sites:
https://coffeeandneurodiversity.com/2019/10/16/missed-opportunities-rambling/
https://www.tameri.com/wordpress/autisticme/2019/10/18/podcast-episode-030-parenting/and the following are hosted by WordPress.com:
https://thegentleandbravewriter.wordpress.com/2019/10/16/this-aspie-woman-finding-her-perfect-spot/
Is this correct?

Just letting you know we were able to remove that one site (issue #2) but we had to have a developer do it as it was stuck in your list.
I’d advise against doing exports / imports right now as I don’t think exporting is going to remove anyone for you.
We’ll be taking a look at issue #3, but can we sync up first and make sure we’re on the same page? I didn’t catch why you’re importing lists of sites to follow. Can you let us know what that’s about?
-
Thanks for removing the spam site. It no longer shows up either in my exported list or in my Reader.
Some other sites seem to be missing from my exported Followed Sites list however, such as mamapineappleblog.wordpress.com (which nevertheless still displays “following” in the bottom right corner of my screen when I open it in a tab). Why is it missing from my exported list?
I curate a large collection of blogs on my WordPress site. Often a blogger changes their site’s URL. If I’m following that blog, I can discover their new URL from my exported Followed Sites list. If I’m not following the blog it just appears deleted. I therefore decided to import all the blogs curated on my WordPress site into another WordPress account is so I can track these URL changes.
Can you duplicate issue #3 (not seeing notifications for sites I want)? If not, how can you address it?
I’ll let you know about any future missing posts I discover.
Are the following sites self-hosted (WordPress.org) or hosted by WordPress.com?
https://misslunarose.home.blog/
https://aspergersallday.home.blog/Thank you for your responsiveness to my issues. It’s much appreciated.
-
Those last two are WordPress.com sites.
We’ll on duplicating issue 3, we’ll figure something out. :)
For that first site, are you able to Follow from https://wordpress.com/read/feeds/50426687 instead, or does it still say Following there?
-
-
It may sound silly but, so we don’t have to bother the devs on this one, can you try unfollowing and re-following it?
-
I just unfollowed and re-followed https://mamapineappleblog.wordpress.com
Have the issued I’ve raised affected other WordPress users? In particular, did the spam site exploit a vulnerability that allowed it to escape unfollowing, and has that vulnerability been patched?
-
There is no vulnerability here – there’s no way following any site in the Reader can put your account, or sites in your account, at risk. The only person being impacted here is the original owner of that domain who apparently had their site hijacked at some point, but as that site is not even hosted on our servers, there’s nothing we can do about that.
-
“Vulnerability” may be the wrong word. The spam site should not have been added to my Followed Sites list in a way that it could not be unfollowed, so something wrong happened. Has this issue affected other users, and has it been fixed so it can’t happen again?

I’m continuing to find sites missing unexpectedly from my exported Followed Sites list, generally from the end of the file. (They nevertheless display “following” in the bottom right corner of my screen when opened it in a tab; among the most recent is https://chartingdoctorterritory.wordpress.com/.)
Have you been able to find out more about this? Would you like more documentation from me? I’ve been exporting my Followed Sites list frequently so I would be able to track the history of this if desired.
-
The first exported Followed Sites list I’ve found on my computer is from May 28, 2017 and contains 1032 sites. The final 487 sites in that file (most of which I’ve been continually following since) are all missing from my latest exported Followed Sites list (which contains 1883 sites).
For every pair of files I’ve checked, there’s a final block of sites in the earlier file that’s missing from the later file. Can you tell me why?
-
Correction: this pattern (of sites being removed from the end of the exported Followed Sites list) seems to have started between April 13 and 28, 2019. Earlier files did not evidence this pattern.
-
It’s obvious in retrospect: there appears to be a maximum size of the exported Followed Sites list of around 270 KB or 1890 sites, whereby earlier sites are dropped from the exported list (though still being followed) as later sites are added. I can live with this, as long as it’s predictable (though I’d prefer all my followed sites to be included in the exported lists).
Does this agree with your information?

I’ve observed WordPress update a site’s URL in the Followed Sites list when a blogger changes their site’s URL. Does this happen if the site is self-hosted (WordPress.org) or only if hosted by WordPress.com? Does WordPress also update the URL if a non-WordPress blogger changes their site’s URL?

This does not appear to be a wide-spread problem.
We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more back from our developers.

I created a new site https://actuallyautisticblogs.home.blog/ that I’m having trouble accessing. When I go to https://wordpress.com/home/actuallyautisticblogs.home.blog I get “You don’t have any WordPress sites yet.”
Please tell me how to access the dashboard for this site. Thank you.

That site is not under the account you’re currently logged into.
You’ll need to log in under the correct account.
