Unhappy About Post Format auto-change

  • Unknown's avatar

I can’t stand the fact that when I post a single image with no text, but with a title, WordPress.com automatically changes the post format from Standard to Image, forcing me to have to edit the post and change it back manually.

I want the title of the post to remain above the image!

The excuse given by WordPress.com: “This is mainly to make sure that your post displays in the best format possible both at WordPress.com [1] and on social media networks [2].”

[1] I am the only person who should be deciding what the best format is for my blog!

[2] I have absolutely no problem with how a Standard post format with only one image and no text displays on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, etc.

    Since this post: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/post-format-auto-change?replies=4#post-1927035

…and others on this topic are closed for further comment, I’m regrettably starting this new one.

I’m a HUGE fan of WordPress.com, I have recommended it to many, many people who have started their own blogs and have personally assisted a number of them to set up their blogs using WordPress.com.

I know you can’t please everyone, but this auto-change configuration stinks and it runs counter to how well WordPress.com enables users to have maximum amount of control over how their blogs and other websites look and function.

    Fix this.

    Thanks, timethief!

I’ve always appreciated how helpful you are to so many here on the forums.

You’re welcome and thanks for the kind words. :)

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. The behavior you report is a feature of WordPress.com and while I get that it doesn’t work the way you would like it to, I don’t anticipate a change.

If your current process isn’t working, you might consider moving to a different theme that displays photo only posts in a format you like better. If you like, I’m happy to help you find a theme.

Thanks for the response, lizthefair, but all due respect, I find it laughable to call this a “feature” when it actually causes more work for any user.

It would take any blogger a couple of minutes, when starting to use any theme, to check out in Preview which post type they like best and then select that post type each time they post. From that point forward, it takes that blogger two seconds to select the post type they want when composing a post.

You aren’t saving them more than two seconds with this “feature”, but you are causing my posts (and I’m not the only one, as evident by previous posts on the forums about this) to be published initially in a format that I don’t want, and then forcing me to edit the post and manually change the post type.

    That’s ridiculous!

I’ll pass your concerns onto our developers. Thanks for letting us know how much trouble this feature is causing you.

P.S. In case any staff actually comes back to this thread:

This issue is particularly problematic as it relates to scheduled posts.

If I have to manually change the post type after I’ve published, and can do it right away, then it’s annoying, BUT…

…I just scheduled an image-only post for tomorrow and realize now that I can’t actually schedule posts like this. I have to be able to be online and able to change the post type right after I publish, which defeats the purpose of schedule posts.

    Fix this.
