Uninstalling themes

    Hello, I am a WordPress.com newbie. This is my first website, and I have only spent a few hours on it. I installed a standard free WordPress theme, and then I installed a commercial theme that I had bought. I successfully installed and activated the new theme, but that is when my success ended. My website looks exactly the same as before I activated my new theme. I even deleted all of the themes except for the new one that I activated. I have spent 1 hour researching what I did wrong, or what step I missed on about 15 websites, but I cannot see any simple answer. I have a lot to learn about making website. What button do I push to fully remove the old theme, and use only the new one?
