Uninvited Gravatar
-
Why on gods green earth is my display picture suddenly a blue gravatar sign: see here: http://bumbulina.wordpress.com/
I never asked for it, it’s completely ugly and I do not have a gravatar accont, hadn’t even heard of it before today…
I uploaded my own avatar, just so I could get rid of that junk but as you might know it’s not retroactive. I didn’t even want to upload an avatar but I couldn’t have that junk follow me around everywhere! :?
Is anybody else having this trouble and can anybody tell me why this happened?

Not exactly. This is just my guess, but WP has been pushing us to use avatars of one kind or another for some time, and the payoff seems to be some kind of SEO reward. This is a centralization, as I would anticipate them doing with OpenID as well before too long. Our WP avatars will be Gravatars and our WP IDs will be our OpenIDs, but that’s just speculation.
-
Well, the “blugee” will likely get everyone to upload an avatar pronto, even if it’s just the blank white one in the FAQ’s.
-
-
It’s a shame there isn’t an option to turn off avatars – it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing one should have to pay $15 and brave the wilds of CSS modification for. I mean, avatars are fun on some sites, but on others they’re an embarassment.
-
You can turn them off on the Recent Comments widget when you configure it; otherwise, you can’t. I don’t know why Automattic wants us all to be avatarded, but they’re adamant about avatardation.
-
If you go here http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/02/27/what-is-an-avatar/ you can download a blank white avatar then upload it as a new avatar and all that will post on comments that you make will be a white square. You can also make of one of your own at 128px x 128px of any color and upload it.

Hi guys, the gravatar blue thingy has changed into this lovely little Pimboli picture so I can’t show you anymore. I thought it wasn’t retroactive and therefore put this in here but when I uploaded my own avatar the uninvited gravatar that forced me to get my own dissapeared.
But I don’t see why wordpress would force us to have an avatar, that’s not what I wanted and I think its a shame they use these tactics.
-
Well, after Pimboli appearing for a while now the blue gravatar thing has taken over again… :S
It’s so weird… it’s on a front page in the recent comments section but when I open that post to look at my comment there’s just the old gray picture..

The Recent Comments widget works differently than the comments themselves. Nobody knows exactly the relationship, either.
-
Ok, not only is it constantly changing from the ugly frigging gravatar thing to my own avatar on old posts (in recent comments) now it comes in recent comments with new posts Iv’e JUST commented on. When it appears there is no link behind it so people don’t know it’s really me!
This is really freaking annoying me! Also my new avatar is only showing up with new comments with the post when it feels like it, and the gravatar thing in the recent comments. And I changed it yesterday so it should work now right? If this gravatar thing doesn’t stop bothering me I’m seriously thinking about leaving this place, I can’t deal with these forceful tactics and I’m no walking free gravatar ad thank you very much!!
-
It’s probably a matter of server side caching of the images. Give it a day or so to stabilize. If it’s still switching back and forth on Monday, then you might want to be concerned.
-
Yeah, hopefully it will change on it’s own but I’m still pissed that WordPress assigned me this ad just cuz they wanted to!
-
I should’ve added the code to supress all avatars on one’s own blog:
.avatar {display:none;}I assume that will work with all themes here, but I’m no expert.
If the issue is instead that you simply don’t want to have an avatar for yourself, then thesacredpath’s suggestion — uploading a blank white square — seems to offer the best solution.

Well, they spent money buying the company, and they’re spending time and resources to develop it, so naturally they’re going to plug it whenever and wherever they can. Including your blog.
I agree, though, that the default blue gravatar is an object of extreme fug.
