Unions.org Capturing Websites

  • Unknown's avatar

    I found this link in my stats;

    Link removed to discourage spam website promotion… -sk

    This isn’t a screenshot of my site since all of the links work including the admin toolbar when I’m logged in. When I log out the toolbar is of course gone. The ‘Contact Us’ link at Unions.org is worthless since it provides provisions for emailing to selectable labor unions but no way to contact admnistrators of the site itself.

    I wouldn’t be too concerned about this if the admin toolbar wasn’t present but it is while I’m logged in and the drop-down ‘My Account’ works and the links are live.
    Here’s a screenshot of the unions.org page while I’m logged in to my WordPress account. The working toolbar is there.

    Has anyone ever encountered this and if so, what did you do.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    They’ve used an iframe to post your blog on their site, and it is hosted on their own webservers. You can find more information and contact phone numbers and emails by doing a who is search.

    http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/unions.org

    Send them an email and tell them you did not approve of this use and to take it down.

    You might have to send an official DMCA violation notice. See this official wordpress blog for more information on that: http://stolen.wordpress.com/ .

    @jwane

    I went ahead and removed the link to the spam website so that they don’t get more visits from this forum thread,,,

    I wonder if wordpress.COM could integrate something like the frame buster plugin that is available for self-hosted blogs. They would have to set it up so that people could whitelist their own website in case they wanted to put their blog in a frame on their own site though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks slikbonez. The people that needed to see it have seen it.

    @thesacredpath
    I hadn’t even thought of an iframe but I did have the buster plug-in installed when I was hosting the site myself. Thanks for the tips.

    I’ve sent them an email and called (voice mail but call not returned) and have updated that entry which appears on their site. I’ll give them plenty of time to respond and I’ll continue to update that post.
    My next update will be a copy of the email I sent them with the admin’s email address.
    If that doesn’t do it then I’ll add the phone number I called and got no response.
    My second step will be to contact BlueHost. Until then my site is idle.
    Thanks foor your help so far.

    TSP,

    I Agree, and the JavaScript code is really easy (I have it in one of my blogs):

    <script type="text/javascript">
    if (window != top) {
    	top.location.href = location.href;
    }
    </script>
  • Unknown's avatar

    Devblog, where do you put that code?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have it in the “header” section of the template, but you can add it in a text widget. It should work the same.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I might pop that into the head section and then not use framebuster.

    We should note for any coming to this thread, that the code devblog provided above will not work with blogs hosted here at wordpress.COM. It will only work on self-hosted blogs..

    Mr. Mike Maddy at unions_dot_org replied that it was simply an RSS feed and that he’s sorry for any inconvenience but took no action. I replied that a properly burned RSS feed will deliver the desired content without jeopardizing the security of the site providing the feed. After 11 hours nothing has been done so I have sent BlueHost an email with all of the details. They of course wont see it until tomorrow.

    unions_dot_org is not affiliated with any labor union but appears to be simply an ad revenue collecting site that offers links to any labor union you may be looking for. Google will do the same thing.

    I found other sites being posted there in the same manner such as Union News and NBC. I pity this guy if I find any content there belonging to Associated Press. They’ll come after him with a vengeance.

    I’ll keep you updated.

    @TSP

    The frame buster plug-in would be a great addition I think because this can happen to anyone and is pretty much out of your control unless and until the site’s host steps in.

    It isn’t an RSS feed, it is an iframe containing the blog page on that post.

    Send the following code to him in a reply email and tell him to remove it from their website.

    <iframe src ="http://autoandracingnews.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/chrysler-group-llc-to-invest-300-million-to-modernize-indiana-plants-for-new-fuel-efficient-eight-speed-automatic-transmission/" width="960px" height="2400px" frameborder=0 scrolling='no'>
      <p>Your browser does not support iframes.</p>
    </iframe>
  • Unknown's avatar

    What they have done is NOT, nor would any court of law, say it was Fair Use.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I knew it wasn’t just an RSS feed but thought maybe there was a way to collect sites using iframes and an RSS feed because they have so many at that site.

    Thanks for the code.

    And no, posting an entire site would not be considered fair use. But since he used the RSS feed as an excuse he probably has no intention of resolving this. I’ll wait and see what BlueHost does.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m seeing them as being on their own webserver:

    Name Server:NS1.UNIONS.ORG
    Name Server:NS2.UNIONS.ORG

    Where did you get the bluehost information?

    If they refuse, copy all the information out of that post (go to HTML tab, copy it out and put it into a new post but save it as a draft, do not publish it).

    Then in the original post, delete everything and say that you are currently having issues with a website stealing your content and putting it into their site using an iframe, and that they have refused to take it down from their site, and that this post is now offline until further notice.

    Or something to that effect. I wouldn’t mention them by URL or anything, just leave that up to the reader.

    I’ve done this in the past, but in a much more nasty way.

  • Unknown's avatar

    LOL! This is what happens when you have too many browser tabs open while trying to gather info. You gave me the link to the info concerning the site in question and a friend and I had the whois info from his site opened also to see what his looked like in comparison. His site is hosted by BlueHost. I’ll call them tomorrow and apologize for wasting their time.

    The site being on their own server will make it more difficult but I’ll do as you say. I’ll be as nice as I can for the first round assuming of course he refuses to remove the code that you gave me. I suspect he won’t even answer me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Best of luck on this issue. I’ve spent more than my fair share of time chasing these deadbeats, but it’s what we all have to do if we care about our content and our rights.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Well, it’s not as if he’s hidden away somewhere in the Ukraine. He’s in California. If all else fails I’ll see if the California Atty General is interested.

    I have a few more steps to take though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I used to know some people who could “visit” the guy back when I lived in California, but that was 18 years ago.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Every webserver needs another to connect to the net.

    http://dnsstuff.com
    traceroute unions.org shows fastservers.net are also responsible for that domain as they can cut it off, they actually host it Find their AUP / TOS and send them something.

    If he’s in Bakersfield you could call on the bikers. Just make them a group blog in exchange.
