Unique theme
-
I don’t understand the difference between a wordpress site (like mine) and a site that uses wordpress software. Does that essentially mean that you have a completely unique site – designed by designers outside of wordpress – but still has all the technical features like support, tagging, comments, stats, plugins etc etc? I would like to give my site a design overhaul and have a designer in mind but still want to use wordpress. But feeling confused…Do I have to use one of the wordpress themes? Thank you, Meg

Hiya Meg!
I do think this document might help clear up the differences between hosting here at WordPress.com and self-hosting via WordPress.org:
At WordPress.com, you’d use one of our 280+ themes. Some are highly customizable with the Custom Design upgrade. But the truth is, you have for more flexibility design-wise, if you choose to self-host.
You can learn a bit more abut self-hosting simply by perusing the WordPress.org site
http://wordpress.org/I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

Thank you thatrobyn, that definitely helps. I think I’ll look at customizing one of your themes. I’m not so good at the tech stuff. Thanks again.

thatrobyn sorry it’s me again. I’ve searched the forums to save bothering you again but can’t find the answer…if I switch to a new theme and ensure it has a custom menu option, is it possible to add icons/little pictures to each menu heading?

Hi there, Meg!
I’m so sorry it’s take a while to get back to you. We’ve been at an all company work retreat.
You cannot add images to a custom WordPress.com menu. Those are text only.
I’m here now. Can I still help with any other questions about your theme/menu? Let me know!
Thanks much.

That’s okay Robyn I sort of worked out by looking at others that the menus are text only. No worries, I just need now to decide on which theme I’m switching to – keep changing my mind!
I suspect there will be questions when I make the switch but for now, thank you, hope you enjoyed your retreat. Meg

Meg, Thanks so much for your patience. The retreat was very useful. We’ve come up with some exciting projects that will make using WordPress.com a great experience.
I just need now to decide on which theme I’m switching to – keep changing my mind!
Ha! I can relate, as I can never decide on my themes, initially either :)
I’m here if any questions arise! All the best to you.
